≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Title: What's a bodybuildin' fisherman gonna do with one arm anyway, right?
Character Name: Texas Battle

Hello!

I've come to you today to make you reconsider the permanent limb removal embodied on my character, Texas Battle.

I realize that some of the IED's were emplaced there in part because of my actions during the event which consisted of running ahead of everyone and mechanically looting. I am not doing this simply because I refuse to let my character get injured or otherwise put my character in danger. However, I wanted to make it a case for fairness. Other players were severely injured during the event as well and they did not receive any permanent debilitating injuries to their character whereas Texas Battle is from now and forever impaired by missing an arm. I am also quite new to the server and I was not familiar about the severity of mech looting during events. I also realize that it was wrong for me to try to speed up my recovery process due to my boredom and I will agree to spend my fair time in recovery with the others and agree to not run ahead of everyone and mechanically loot which can be disruptive to roleplay in the future in the hopes that there can be a ret-con in regards to getting a permanent debilitating injury specifically and only for my character, Texas Battle.

Thank you!

Hey there Bill.

So we've gone over this with you numerous times about the injury. The limb removal is not going to be retconned and that is the final decision of the admin team. Actions have consequences and you were observed carelessly running forward into IED's, regardless of you saying whether or not you'll do it again. For example, you can't shoot someone's dog and then say 'sorry, it won't happen again' and expect things to go back to how they were.

This isn't even bringing into account how you, at numerous times, ignored these injuries, and got up and ran around working on a base like you were never injured, not to mention the attitude you've taken with the team over this entire situation.

This is not a case of this being unfair to you because you are not the first person to be severely injured like this and you will not be the last person to see an injury like this. I also would like to point out Andy shares the same fate as you do, except it is his leg, not his arm.

You are making it sound like I knew there were IED's there and just wanted to blow myself up completely. It was an unforeseen accident. I've had my chat box closed and I barely paid any attention to the voice channel. Not that it'd matter.
They were hidden right in the middle of the crate stacks. Apparently to restrain players from looting. Something that I wasn't aware of how frowned upon it is during events.

As for the injuries - I've only went there once with the intention of making a proper door with another player who had the required carpentry level.
The attitude that I've taken to the admins is due to their unwillingness to give me a proper chance to explain myself. Every time I've even requested an audience, I was told that the other admins already decided it and to turn to the tickets. Something which irritated me due to how easily we could have talked it through within the time span of 5 minutes. Instead of me having to make all this fuss.

And as I've been told, Andy has had his leg amputated. And then last week, he immediately ran into combat. So it is quite unfair from where I'm standing. Not that I want to throw anyone under the bus.

I didn't ask for you to explain yourself or what you did or didn't see. I gave you the team's ruling and as per rules, the admins' decision is final. You've escalated this to tickets since you weren't pleased which I am totally fine because you should be able to if you're not satisfied with the ruling so you can get more of an explanation as to why this was ruled or to change the ruling if it was unfair. You're continuing to argue, though, after this has been explained as to why this is not being retconned.

Events are also not about voice chat and as far as I know, you've participated in events before so you know what you're getting into with them in terms of looting, roleplay, and combat. I can't speak for whether or not event runners are against looting, but I know they are against people doing little to no rp and going ahead and looting without saying anything. IED's were there to likely deter people who loot without rping looking around for traps like someone should do in a location deemed unsafe and likely booby-trapped. I'm not saying you weren't roleplaying because I was not there for that, but I'm telling you how the situation pertaining to you setting off the IED's was explained to me.

And it doesn't matter if you went to that base once to help with a door; the point of it is that you got up to help someone when you should have been in bed, plain and simple. If someone needs help with something mechanically, get ahold of them in the discord or use the /whisper system in game. I've heard you've gotten up and run around oocly as well, I'm assuming only once as well. I've had characters with injuries before and as much as I've wanted them to, I never had them up and running around unless they could actually move. Marian being the example of being nearly killed by an explosion, covered with severe burns and lacerations in the Barter Town lore two or three years ago. I may have wanted her to get up and move but it wasn't realistic to be up and walking around as if nothing was wrong after being a victim to such injuries.

The point is if you would be realistically bed-ridden, stay bed-ridden. No if's, an's, or but's about it.

And as a side note. Andy had his leg amputated 13 years ago and has had 13 years to get used to a prosthetic. You'd be shocked at what someone who is disabled can do. Frankly, there are amputees that are more competent than I am with all four of my limbs intact.

How would you be able to ask someone for carpentry help when they don't know where exactly the base is?

I need to escort them there. Whisper or not, it's not really easy to navigate them through text.

Also I'm fine with serving my time in the clinic. But not for literal 2 real life weeks. That's 2 weeks of nothing but constant idlying and the occasional visitors. If they care to visit, that is.
I'm all for realism, but this is absolutely stupid.

And I'm not trying to argue about how I set off the traps, that's perfectly valid. I didn't look closely and got blown up.

But like I've said before in previous conversations, the second IED shouldn't have counted. (The one that did the deed to the arm)
As Texas would have still been recovering from the very first blast. Which most likely knocked him down on the ground.

They can ask you in the Discord if it's ooc. If it's ic, they can come to visit you in the hospital. Also, just give them coordinates if you have them, if not, well you'll have to give directions as best you can. And I and other people have served a longer time in an infirmary for injuries similar or less than what you've received. Next time if you participate in an event, be more careful and aware of things that happen.

It is not just stupid, it is realism; and it is the consequences of actions. What's done is done and if you didn't want the second to count, you shouldn't have just roleplayed being blown back and continued on. The second one counts, plain and simple. That is the admin team's decision, and we are not changing it.

We can cut down your time in the clinic and you can walk around with the assistance of a crutch or in a wheelchair if there is one if you'd like for that two week period. We also don't mind you doing things like fishing and the like, just remember to actually rp a struggle doing them and not just being excellent at doing everything one-armed that you shouldn't automatically be good at.

That wouldn't make sense.
If you’re so much for realism then how can you not agree with the whole thing?

A person who just got his lights knocked out from an IED shouldn't be able to walk around 3 seconds later!

That was just me, mech looting. Because I didn't think it was gonna be such a big fuss in the future.

As for everything else, how am I supposed to RP struggling with the fishing when I can't even start RP fishing at all? It just doesn't make sense.
My character's entire bit was being a good fisherman!

It -is- a big fuss and it's not our fault, it's yours. Stop arguing with the ruling and stop being argumentative about me attempting to meet you in the middle ground. I have tried here consistently to give you an explanation and tried to be compromising here at the end to offer you the ability to leave the hospital today if Texas takes it easy and all I get is you complaining and trying to contradict me more?

It is not -our- fault that you got up, laughed it off, and continued forward like nothing happened and mech. looted. It is an issue, Bill, because you shouldn't have been able to do it but you did so you reap the consequences of it because you decided to ignore your injuries. It's done.

Stop arguing me about this point after I have said the admin decision is FINAL. FINAL, BILL, means we are not changing our minds on this. You're lucky we didn't rule he died altogether and just gave you debilitating INJURIES.

And as for the struggle, it's called figure it out. I am not going to be nice about this anymore. Other players find ways to rp struggling; you can find yourself a handicapped fishing rod or figure out how to make one yourself with someone's help and rp struggling using it. You can rp fishing, you can rp doing a lot of things. Texas is not USELESS just because he lost a limb. There are a lot of people with fewer limbs than him that learn to have a full Happy life.

So to recap.
1.) The arm is gone.
2.) You can still mech fish, how you rp it is for you to create.
3.) This decision is final and we'll be closing the ticket. Further tickets regarding the arm or the ied's will disregarded.
