Personality
Garland is a calm and collected man, and has been so even before the outbreak. This, along with a strong willpower, helped him from a hard childhood all the way through college and three divorces. He never settles for something for too long.
Character Motivations
Growing up, his only desire was to reach the places that were seemingly impossible for the rest of his peers. During his adult life, the days just seemed to drag on, and Garland could never achieve the happiness they said would come with financial success. After the oubreak, the weight of this dull life was finally lifted, and the will to survive overcame any tedium he ever felt. After the first year since then, Garland has seen very few people, mostly hostiles. As if an animal overtook this once well-educated man, he no longer desires the company of others, and is focused on his own survival.
Physical Appearance
Middle aged, olive skinned, of mediterranean descent. Graying black hair that is kept in check by a pair of shears until the edge gives up. Same for the beard. Once of a large build, his poor diet has kept the man lean, but strong.

Biography
Garland is from an immigrant family, but was raised in a foster home since he was a very young child. He's a survivor of an arson that killed several other families on the building he lived in. Despite his hard upbringing, he always excelled in his studies and managed to get a good scholarship. However, he always felt like an outcast, even though he could be very social when the situation demanded. This was even clearer in his relationships, which always crumbled from his lack of awareness of how his partner felt. Everything was on route to a bitter end - no chidren, no love, no close friends. One could say the outbreak was his chance to live life, instead of rotting away.
