≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Charlotte is trying to stay neutral in most situations, she knows that voicing her opinions might cause big conflicts, so she usually prefers to stay quiet. She loves to learn and understand the importance of different skills - sometimes it's life or death.
Deeply, the whole thing scarred her and left unable to grieve after her parents, friends and her community. She misses them. Since she was a little girl when everything started, she struggles to understand what is moral and what is ethical. People spoke about those two a lot as she was growing up, but then did different things. Charlotte never managed to understand that.
As the pandemic hit when she was a little girl, she was never able to truly develop her personality and despite her age, she does not act like a 25 year old. It feels like she is a naive little girl, who knows how to do certain things that keep her alive, like farming or hunting. However, it does not fit with her personality. At first, she appears to be shy, but then as people start to understand her better, they know there is something deeply wrong with her on many levels. However, she doesn't know that and is trying to stay positive and carefree.

Character Motivations
Charlotte wants to be a part of a community and learn as much as she can about the world around her. She wants to play an important role - not as a leader, but more like a someone who could teach and support the others. She is very curious about the world around her and "how it was before".

Physical Appearance
Charlotte is 164cm tall and weighs around 56kg. She has brown hair with a fringe, usually in a high ponytail. She usually just wears stuff that fits the weather and keeps her warm. She would always prefer stuff that is useful rather than good looking. Charlotte has green eyes and usually due to her personality and looks, appears way younger.

Biography
Charlotte comes from a pretty wealthy family. Her father was a high rank in the military, while her mother was just a stay-at-home mom, just like millions of others "military wives". Due to that, Charlotte and her family need to move around quite a bit. She was constantly changing schools, friends and neighbourhoods, which resulted in her being quite distant from everyone and usually just focussing on her passions - something, that could never be taken away from her. She loved drawing. Her biggest dream was to draw comics or make illustrations for books. As a child she had a whole notebook filled with stories she illustrated.

When first outbreaks happened, she was around Phoenix in Oregon. She still remember when as a little girl, was hiding behind her mother's leg, as her father was taken to help with organising stuff in the National Guard. Charlotte couldn't understand what was going on - how could she know that soon after that her life will completely change?

Everything was flipped upside down and little girl needed to learn many skills to survive in a new, dangerous world. Her father never came back, but sent his friends from the army to look after his wife and daughter. They strived to survive for a few months, until the death came for her mother. They travelled. A lot. Looking for answers, food and shelter.

Charlotte quickly learned that the army was basically dead, at least this part that her father served in. They failed. There was no news, no nothing. Charlotte was a part of many different small groups. However, not much of it worked out. She understood that the world was and will always be run by greed and violence. She ended up alone at some point and escaped, not wanting to play small part in meaningless conflicts.

She wanted something better. Soon after that, Charlotte ended up on a farm, caring for the animals and doing basic duties. Seemed like staying in a place like this was the best during this whole mess - she managed to learn how to feed herself and the others. Her skills helped her, as she draw in her notebook different species of wild plants. She learned a lot from the community and became a part of it. Obviously, as she was growing up, having a shelter and people looking after her was incredibly important.

The community was strong, she was a part of it for multiple years until some other community attacked them - despite being completely peaceful before. They traded together for years. Charlotte was angry. Very angry.

She managed to escape and for multiple months travelled on one of the horses. Foraging and feeding herself from what she could hunt or find. She knew what to look for and how to take care of herself. But she wanted revenge. That didn't took her very far. Winter caught her off guard and surprised like never, when she noticed first snowflakes falling from the sky, as she was falling asleep in an empty cave by a fireplace. She knew there were other communities. Charlotte never knew much about them, as she was mostly only working on the field and caring for the animals or hunting. Obviously she had the basic idea but was just afraid - since their other allies turned hostile on them, how could she know if the same won't happen again? With shaky hands, she opened the map taken from her community. She realised that her home was miles, miles away. How could she travel that far? It was a few months, but driven with basic instincts she didn't even realise how far she went. She was running away like a wounded animal. But now it's over. She sobbed one last time and closed her eyes.

Mildly malnourished and basically freezing, Charlotte was found nearby the Monroe and brought into the community by one of the scouts. They saved her life.

Heya, Maggie! I've reviewed your application and it's accepted!

Here's your login info:

As for your skills, don't be afraid to request higher levels! 14 years is a long time. More than enough time for someone to master a skill, or at least come close to mastering one. I personally don't mind giving players one or even multiple level 10 skills as long as it makes sense for their character. More than likely I'll give you whichever levels you request, but if it seems a bit overkill then I'll let you know.

If you have any questions, feel free to reply and ask. Thanks!

Thanks, that sounds great!

Would this be a problem to have:

Farming - 10
Cooking - 9
Fitness - 7
Strength - 6
Fishing - 7
Foraging - 6
Trapping - 3

If any of them is too much, please let me know, I will change!

Also, someone mentioned to me that I will need teleport to Monroe, as that's where my character starts. Can I just ask any admin for that when I will be IG?

Thanks!! :)
