≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Stan has an analytical approach to life, with little space for emotion. These developed long before the outbreak started and as a result, they made him fit to survive in a world where right and wrong is a blurred line. Stan is not selfish, but does many things in the interest of self-preservation rather than the "greater good". Stan is a harsh person, never shy to tell people the truth they do not wish to hear. Stan considers himself a good person, but knows that he would do what he needs to if necessary to live. However, he is nervous to come across a day where he must carry this out directly. He prefers not to form any emotional attachment, citing the temporary nature of life in this world, along with obligations that may come as a result of said emotional attachment. Stan sometimes feels an obligation to do the right thing, and will help in circumstances, but often choosing his own survival besides others. Stan will generally try to figure people out, while keeping his own past/personality a secret.

Character Motivations
Stan views each day as a new challenge, and considers each day survived one more than the last. His goal is to one day be in a position where he can decide right or wrong once more, though a part of him feels that world is long gone. Stan doesn't know what keeps him going beyond this, and it is an often thought of his. He sometimes thinks that he carries the weight of those he abandoned through his callous approach, feeling as though the guilt can carry him through the days.

Physical Appearance
Rugged from years of survival in a harsh world, Stan's face sports a few scars of various origins. His hair is pitch black and messy, with a slight stubble developing from drifting from place to place. He stands at 6'2, with a lean and by no means athletic build. He looks no more than 45,

Biography
Stan was raised in a priviliged household in Sacramento, California. From a young age he was brought up with little affection, instead being told by his parents
the harsh truths of the world rather than temporary comforts. This translated into his early years into his teens as having few friends and fewer romantic entanglements,
viewing these as no measure of success, rather sinking into academics. This enabled him to shine above his peers, and to eventually go on to study at Stanford University.

Stan developed friendships with those around him daily as a result, slightly letting himself show emotion, though still living through the idea of attachment being a burden.
This set him up for the job he dreamt of: a lawyer. Stan figured that his ability to look at a situation logically and in an analytical manner, along with his long-fuelled
idea of separating his emotions, would make him perfect for this. Upon graduating from Stanford, he went on to work for a law firm in his hometown for many years.

Stan still maintained connections with those he studied alongside, although he kept himself at a distance "for his own safety", as he liked to call it. His distance from
social interaction largely contributed to his unwavering focus at his job and his portfolio spoke for that. In his spare time, Stan would often read up on books, articles
or whatever relevant media he can on anything related to his job. This would even extend to books on criminal psychology, granting him a slight empathy towards those in
various positions he otherwise lacked in his younger years. He would often choose the likes of classical music, which he saw as emotionless and precise; perfectly crafted.

At the age of 26, Stan's parents were involved in a fatal collision with an oncoming truck, killing them both instantly. This felt like his first emotional adversity, and
he became distant in his work and with the few friends he still talked to. Months after this, he chose to separate himself as best he could from the place he grew up in,
wishing to leave his past behind. He moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he continued to practice law. The incident changed him, and it was apparent in his job. His calculated,
analytical approach seemed fogged by his past traumas. A few months before the outbreak began, this turned on its head when he spoke out in outburst while dealing with a case
involving a road traffic collision. As a result, a few months before the outbreak started, he was suspended from practicing law.

When the outbreak first began, Stan deeply considered if he wished to live in a world where death is at the front of one's mind daily. Stan slowly hardened over the months and years
of the outbreak, surviving with groups but often alone. Multiple times he saw the gradual breakdown of groups and the fallout due to it and as a result he is hesitant to involve
himself with more than a few people. Stan carries guilt from the deeper years of the outbreak, often having abandoned groups on the brink and leaving them to their fate. Stan considers
himself good in a moral sense, but knows that good people must do the worst things for the sake of living. Knowing this, he still is nervous for a day that would test him to this point.
