≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Javier Nassim Abdessalam is a man of complexities, contradictions, and plenty of problems. He prefers to show himself as a kind-hearted, compassionate individual willing to sever his own arm to save another. It's a bit of an act, as once you get to know him, Javier shows himself off as being somewhat arrogant and vain due to the fact his profession is highly valued, even going as far as comparing himself to a god. While he can, and often is professional, he will sometimes offer jokes at inappropriate moments. He is, however, a capable doctor who is willing to help anyone in need.

There is a side of him that is compassionate, and one willing to extend an actual--genuine--helping hand to anyone around him, given his past struggles with addiction and his own problems with post-traumatic stress disorder caused by his time spent overseas, and most recently, his time serving as a conscripted nurse at a military compound at the beginning of the outbreak. Though, with his time spent there, Javier has become ... cold, to some extent, with some of his treatments. He knows when to not waste medicine on a lost cause, and will often take matters into his own hands if need be.

Basically, Javier is a person -- his personality flips from day-to-day depending on his mood. He might be professional one day, and more light-hearted another.

Character Motivations
His motivations are ever-shifting, but at the beginning, are simple -- survive. There are other things Javier would like -- such as finding his ex-wife and kid, even if he has long given up on them.

Additionally, Javier has a very deep connection and friendship with his cat he picked up in his travels. He will go to great lengths to protect it.

Physical Appearance
He is an approachable olive-skinned man who stands at five-foot-eight inches. His appearance often shifts -- some days being more haggard, and other days being cleaner. He is built with lean muscle and an average frame. Javier has seen better days, and it shows in his face -- while he puts on a smile, the tiredness and long hours spent awake show in his eyes and the manner he carries himself. His black hair is usually kept at medium-length and his beard trimmed to match.

Javier's choice in clothing reflects in his mood for the day; more often being practical and sometimes reflecting something similar to someone living before the outbreak hit.

Biography
Born in Englewood (Chicago, Illinois) on September 1st of 1991, Javier Nassim Abdessalam grew up with a Moroccan father and Spanish mother in a low-income neighborhood wrought with drug-use and crime. His childhood was rough and he was unable to escape the woes of poverty. At an early age, Javier ended up skipping school and netting himself the reputation of a troublemaker with his friends that eventually served as his gateway into petty crime. In his teens, Javier had his nose stuck in plenty of different games; purse-snatching, drug-dealing, and various other cons, one in specific would serve him in acquiring his nickname -- Bugsy. He worked an odd-job for a contact he had, Criss-Cross, and managed to pawn off a box (thought to be a high-priced video game console) of rocks to some gullible pawn-shop owner looking to turn a quick dime. The authorities were contacted, and in an attempt to save his own face, he spun his own tale of Javier up -- he was a silver-tongued devil who managed to slip into his head, he had answers for everything and never even broke a sweat. Ended up comparing him to Bugsy Malone, but only Bugsy ended up sticking, even if he wasn’t ever actually anywhere near that level of a talker or conman.

Later in his life, Javier enlisted in the United States Army to escape his previous life of crime. He ended up studying and settling himself as a combat medic (64W) and saw conflict overseas in Iraq, Afghanistan and several other locations in the middle east. He rode out his contract and ended up retiring after riding out his contract. He suffered from an addiction to opioids after being discharged due to a lingering injury and suffered from numerous mental problems due to pre-existing post-traumatic stress disorder from his time spent in active combat zones. After a few months of wasting around, and nearly killing himself, he ended up getting roped into a counseling session run by another veteran. Within a few months, he managed to get clean, and was doing much better mentally, with some support, he ended up going back and getting all of the certifications he needed and started teaching in an all-male high school. He married, had a kid, and eventually ended up divorcing as time went on and relationship life did not suit him. Though it was on mutual terms, and the relationship remained strictly as friends while he still played a part in his child's life up until the beginning of the outbreak.

At the beginning and consequential height of the outbreak, Javier was caught off-guard and in the middle of it on his way back home. It was days before he was able to make it back to his ex-wives neighborhood, where he had hoped to reunite with her and his son -- both of them were long gone. It was only natural he ended up heading to one of the local evacuation centers with hopes of finding them, only he never did. A few weeks into it, many officials started calling on civilians to offer helping hands if they had any medical experience, and given his prior experience overseas as a combat medic, he was called on. He ended up getting transferred from posting to posting in numerous different evacuation centers spread around the city, and finally one primary compound nestled in the outskirts where potential infectees and critically injured military personnel were being transferred. He saw many horrible things while there, the worst of the worst in terms of injuries, most of them usually ending with him having to put them down for the sake of others. This position carried a toll on him, and the amount of life he claimed from it brought old memories back to the front -- even if it didn’t last as long as his mind might have had him think. Eventually, the compound was overrun by a large migration of undead a few months into the outbreak, and Javier was one of the unfortunate few to miss the helicopters piloting people out to an aircraft a few miles off-coast.

He and several others who were left behind ended up escaping the city aboard one of the left behind trucks. Most of them held together for a while, but eventually, in the end, all split off with different goals and destinations in mind. Javier spent several years moving from state-to-state looking for any potential signs of his ex-wife or son. Over the course of those years, his exposure and experience with individuals led to him forming a bitter and ultimately cynical opinion on the nature of humanity -- that they are selfish, and that they are brutal and will do whatever it is they want to achieve their goals. His disillusioned state led to him holding extreme mistrust for larger communities, given their tendencies to fall apart and crumble from within, and other individuals as a whole for their desires to see their goals through without any care for the potential cost. Twelve years in, Javier has seen no signs of his family and has long given up on ever finding them, figuring them for dead. His last group fell apart, and he has been alone for several months traveling up toward Upstate New York. For what? Who knows. Only the heart knows what it wants.

Would you like your character to start with any items?
Cat, Medical Equipment, Sidearm. I'll spawn in the rest, I guess. I don't really know.

Would you like your character to start with any skills?
I'd like most of my physical skills (sprint, str, fitness, etc) to be bumped up to at least 8. Same with aim, and other combat skills.

Is your character a member of a group?
No
