≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

I Agree
Yes

Has this character appeared in a previous lore?
No

Age
38

Blood Type
A Positive

Personality
Valentin used to be an easygoing man that would approach everyone with a smile on his face, interested in their stories and personality. Since the apocalypse he has been somewhat more careful, though he usually still tends to approach those arround him, engaging them in conversation to learn more about them and his surroundings. He has a very defined inner moral compass and believes that those with ill or simply evil intent need to be removed by society in whatever way is acceptable for the community in order for humanity to survive these trying times.

Character Motivations
He wishes to use his skills to help those arround him, ideally without putting himself in too much danger. Valentin likes to be well informed about the people arround him, and would love to once more run his own pub, serving food and drinks. Otherwise he would like to find a new home, a new group of people to belong to.

Physical Appearance
He is 6 feet 3 with hazelnut brown hair and blue eyes. His physique clearly indicates a man that is used to physical labor and travelling on his own if need be. A full beard can usually be found covering the lower half of his face, well taken care of and regularly washed if the situation allows.

Especially his hands seem roughed up, and quite often stained with small amounts of oil and other mechanical fluids, dust and dirt if he has recently been working.

Biography
Valentin's early years were entirely without anything of notice. He visited a regular school in germany but quickly decided that college was not the way to go after finishing, instead preferring to do something more physical that still required him to think on his feet to solve problems. Having had an interest in cars and other vehicles he started an apprenticeship as a vehicle mechanic, working at a local tuning shop. After his initial education that lasted for three years he specialized in vehicle electronics and chip tuning which eventually led him to become part of a team of mechanics that provided service to customers wanting to race cars in fixed-car cup events.

One such customer wanted to compete in a number of american events and paid for the team to fly out with him, an opportunity that Valentin gladly took never having left europe before, taking a flight to the United States. He was working the weekend at Watkins Glen Raceway in New York State when the pandemic began, unable to secure a flight back to europe as Red Eye quickly spread arround the world.

He helped out in a local national guard unit for some time, maintaining vehicles, staying safe within the base perimeter until the situation started to deteriorate further and society truly began to break down. He and a few others grabbed a truck and travelled arround the more rural areas, surviving on their own for a long time which is where he learnt to survive in a smaller group, picking up key skills for survival.

Eventually they travelled to Michigan, having heard of a very secure, isolated colony that screened possible citizens very well. That community's name was Aurora, and indeed after they arrived there they were carefully inspected for their skills and demeanour. The place was run under a tight set of rules and eventually his small group was accepted into the inner walls.

For the majority of the time between the outbreak and now he spent as part of Aurora, running his own bar and pub that served food and drinks to the community. As such he was usually very well informed about the things that went on inside the settlement, and learned of a few cases where certain behaviour that he considered morally wrong was swept under the rug for the "greater good" of survival. Valentin grew more and more disgruntled with this, eventually proposing an initiative to the inner circle where replacements for certain positions were actively sought so those of questionable character could be banished from Aurora.

Without actively realising he became part of a sort of secret police that monitored those arround them for their behaviour and would, in a small amount of cases, decide on who to exile. Valentin had no moral issues with this as it simply ensured the removal of those which were a poison to society, though it eventually came to be the killing blow of Aurora.

A small group of those exiled held a, from their point of view, understandable grudge against the settlement and spread information to a nearby group of marauders that eventually began to raid the settlement, not by killing but simply taking those going outside the walls hostage and requesting material for their release. This caused a big chain of disagreements within the settlement that eventually lead to it's demise, several groups breaking off on their own until nothing was left. As part of this information about the secret organization that had been judging those arround them became known, and most of those within it shunned by the others, Valentin one of them.

People he considered his friends, best allies, people he trusted and even one he loved made him and a small group of others responsible for the crisis at hand and eventually he just packed his personal belongings into a truck and left, one of the first to leave the gates of Aurora behind himself.

Now he is looking for a new home, one where his old past would not be brought up against him. From his perspective, he has learned. . . learned that if you do make a decision that someone needs to be removed from society, it needs to be permanent, without a way for retribution.

STORY EDIT: Added the little, possibly important fact that the character is from Germany, not the US. . . because y'know, country of birth might be worth mentioning!

Would you like your character to start with any items?
An iron bastard sword, forged by the smith of Aurora for him personally.
Ranger Jacket

Would you like your character to start with any skills?
Whatever level of Mechanics, Electrical and Cooking the team sees fit as to the character backstory. If possible a set of cooking recipes (through spawned magazines or w/e) - though I entirely understand if that is too much work involved!

Is your character a member of a group?
No

Heya, Arrow! I've reviewed your application and it's accepted!

As for your skills, don't be afraid to request higher levels! 14 years is a long time. More than enough time for someone to master a skill, or at least come close to mastering one. I personally don't mind giving players one or even multiple level 10 skills as long as it makes sense for their character. More than likely I'll give you whichever levels you request, but if it seems a bit overkill then I'll let you know. I can definitely spawn in recipe magazines for you that would make the most sense for your character.

Also, just a tiny clarification: what do you mean by Ranger jacket? My first assumption is a CPF Ranger uniform, though the CPF isn't mentioned anywhere in your biography so I doubt that's it. I can spawn it in regardless, I just want to make sure I spawn/rename the correct item.

If you have any questions, feel free to reply and ask. Thanks!
