≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Christopher Dane is generally a weak-willed man with not much to say. His past has made him something of a sheep. But deep down, there is determination to be seized - he’s actually morally headstrong and resilient, at the cost of often being overly trusting of people. His work and relationships with other people has taught him, wrongly, to keep his mouth shut and trust others blindly, as he holds the belief that his ideas are useless. In essence, he’d much rather be a cog than a lever that puts the machine in motion.

Beyond his own ideals, he’s generally a good man - at least, he’ll always try to be. He’s learned to cope with stress relatively well, thanks to his work environment. Furthermore he has a fascination for some of the simpler things in life - he enjoys star gazing, long forest walks and scrolling through Reddit, and watching sitcoms on his time off. These isolating hobbies probably explain why he hasn’t had a romantic relationship in five years. Either that, or he’s still bleeding over the last one.

To close out Christopher’s personality, he lives a life in the shadows of two things - the past, and other people. But though he has always admired greater men than him, maybe this time - if he’s lucky, and grows up a little - he might just become one himself. He might just find the courage to step out of the shadows, and into the light.

Physical Appearance
Christopher Dane stands at 5 ft 8 in, weighing in about 150 lbs. His build is slim, but with some degree of muscle. His hair is light brown, kind of short, but long enough to generally sit neatly off his forehead. He cares a surprising amount about its appearance, even when the world around him is crumbling. His eyes are a gentle blue, set rather shallow into their sockets. He’s debatably handsome to some degree with a face of neat symmetry. He has a fast-growing beard which he means to shave or trim regularly, but often forgets.

Dane usually wears a suit of some description as a habit of his Marketing work. Grey or Blue - never black. He sometimes wears a waistcoat if he’s feeling up to it. Without a suit, he simply prefers deep-blue or darker colours and polo shirts to maintain a rather structured look, ‘sophisticated’ look.

Biography
Born in 1991, on the 20th of April to Micheal and Angelina Dane, Christopher Jason Dane grew up in a well-off family in Arlington Heights, in Northern Illinois. Chris’ father worked in court most days in Chicago, upholding law as a Public Defender, and thus developed a rather distant relationship to Chris. While his mother worked as a Night-Shift Nurse in the local hospital. So, for a role model, Christopher looked up to his 3 years older brother Samuel. Samuel was, in many aspects, far superior to Chris growing up. Smarter, Athletic, Charms - Samuel would always be above Chris in some way. Thus, Chris lived much of his childhood in Samuel’s shadow. Always being sub-par. Going into High School, Chris only came to be known as ‘Samuel’s Brother’ everywhere he went, to everyone he met. The High School Heroes’ little brother. In the end, the only person who ever called him Christopher was his mother. As Chris, his Father, Brother and a few of his brother’s friends. Beyond that, he was no one. A boy made of Cellophane blowing in the wind. Marked as ‘The Most Forgettable’ in the Year Book.

Samuel then left for University in Texas, at UT Austin (University of Texas at Austin) to study law. For 3 Years, Christopher was a ghost in his own school. No real friends, just acquaintances and shallow smiles of pity. But Christopher would, rather depressingly, follow Samuel after finishing school - but instead of studying law, he’d go on to study marketing at Texas State University (TSU). Since he didn’t quite make the roll for UT Austin. But, the proximity to his brother, he felt, was important for his own self-esteem. Since he felt his brother would help him actually get some good friends. But, to Chris’ dismay, Samuel only visited once throughout his entire stay at TSU.

To Chris’ credit, he did okay at TSU nonetheless - he managed a few relationships, some friends which were wildly more charismatic than he was. In addition to actually managing a few girlfriends. But, by the time his University days were over, he would quickly find himself alone again - much to his own fault. After breaking up with his then-girlfriend Lilly under his own self-prescribed pretence ‘it wouldn’t work’. With his Inheritance from his grandparents, he moved to Fort Holly shortly after being offered a job in a small, but ‘growing’ firm in 2014. He’s worked there ever since. It was two years into the job as an Assistant Marketing consultant that he realised he was trapped, as the firm wasn't growing at all. Thus, He’d Work, Go Home, Eat, Sleep, Wake Up, and Work. It was a loop. Like that movie.

The only free time and fulfilment Chris had was in his Weekend Hobbies. Stargazing, Long Walks, Movies, Online Surfing. He even tried to teach himself music, and still does sometimes. Oh, and Christmas he would go home to mother and father, and see Samuel, who has a Job in Austin. Lawyer in a big firm. Doing well for himself as of 2018 - Married, kids on the way, etc, etc.

However, this would be the last he would see any of them. Unlucky for Christopher, that in the middle of May 2019, his Marketing firm would go on a Camping Retreat as a Team-building exercise. May 17th would be the last anyone would ever hear from the firm.

That is, until just over a week later, Christopher would emerge from the wooded trail alone. Camping Pack on his back and a Survival Axe, which appears to have seen some use. With no direction, he would then stumble on into the group he is in now. With Survivor's guilt beginning to set in.
