≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Approximately how many hours do you play a week?
I've played 41 hours since the 21st.

Describe your roleplay experience.
I have been roleplaying on forums and other games for the last ten years. I've spent extensive hours building lores, sceneries, and watching characters grow from meek shut-ins to main players over a long period of time. I'd love to do the same regarding this community.

Have you ever been involved in roleplay leadership and/or creating a lore?
I have multiple times. I've been DMing for Dungeons and Dragon's games for the last five years and have successfully completed each campaign I've started with my groups. I'm currently the owner and loremaster of a Discord server the was created in July of this year. I can provide the writing behind it if necessary.

I believe in balancing events in a way that both benefits character development as well as story progression, while still instilling the threat of true danger. It is an incredibly hard line to walk but I believe it is doable. I also believe in speaking directly to users about what they want from events, taking that input, and crafting unique experiments. The way I have found this to work best is through polls whether it be on the discord itself using announcement reactions or through the function on Gateway's forums.

Have you ever been an admin on an online game? If so, for what groups and for how long?
I am the current owner of a Discord roleplay group, as well as the DM for three D&D campaigns. I have extensive experience being apart of staff on forums as well as online games such as GTA5, The Forest, and other obscure games. The largest server I ever participated in was one with 20,000 users and I was one of the senior staff members. None of my time on these teams was less than eight months. The reason for my departure was never for malicious reasons or anything regarding drama.

Do you have any skills that could help the team?
When it comes to my skills as an admin, I have always had a knack for staying as calm, cool, and collected as possible. In any situation, I understand that I must remain professional regardless of my own feelings about the matter as it is my job to help make the experience better benefit the player rather than myself. I understand that there are situations where a player may feel as if they were cheated or robbed of these experiences and I’d like to do whatever it is that I can to calm the tides and build a better relationship between the Gateway admin team and its player base.

Apart from my general demeanor, I tend to see things from a different lens than most do. I try to turn the most mundane of events into something the players would remember in the long run. Not everything has to be a harrowing death trap to make an impact. Sometimes stumbling across a scene you were unprepared for can do much more damage than a bullet. For example, take a situation where the players come across what appears to be a wounded mother.

She begs for their help in returning her infant child to her, giving the players a general idea of where these would be kidnappers would be. Once the players had found them, the kidnapper gives them a story about how the woman they met is a liar. This forces the players to make a choice they never thought they’d have to make. Do they return the child? How do they move forward? What’s next? Whatever choice they make determines the course of this child’s life. They must make a decision for someone who is unable to.

What do you think you may need to improve upon in terms of being an admin?
I don’t believe in using a confrontational approach. I never have and it’s not a method I’m willing to use. I believe that all people, even those aiming to get under your skin, deserve to be fairly heard and spoken with respectfully. I’m wholeheartedly unwilling to argue with a player, rather opting to mute them and take the situation into a private conversation. Though despite this, I believe I could learn to be a bit more firm when it comes to a player becoming belligerent.

If you had to suggest a change to the way things are done on Gateway, what would it be?
While I am aware that I’ve only been a member of this server since the 21st of November, I am not without knowledge of what has been going on within this community as of the last few months. I’ve taken it upon myself to read the thread that was made by players and have found that the common complaint seems to be directly the way that the admin team has handled situations when it comes to themselves and others.

I believe that adding an admin who is new and without tenure may be the best option moving forward. I have yet to make any lasting friendships or bury my roots in the community the way that I am under the impression that most of the staff team has. I would be able to give a fresh, unbiased perspective without leaning toward any one person due to some history I may have with them or any friendship I may have created and/or lost over the course of time Gateway has been around.

I do understand the risk of allowing someone you know little to nothing about into something that is undoubtedly important to each and every one of you, but the thread had made one thing clear to me. These people care and want to be heard, and I believe that I am able to provide that to them.

Hi, Exile! Normally we wouldn't accept someone onto the team unless they've played on the server for a substantial period of time (typically a minimum of one month, which was the case for me in 2015,) but considering our current circumstances, we are definitely in need of more team members. Having a completely fresh team member will absolutely be advantageous as well. Your application looks incredibly promising with all of the experience you have!

Instead of immediately making you a full-fledged admin, you'll be given a trial run on the team. Once we know you're up to the task, we'll promote you to a full-fledged admin.

I'll go ahead and give you your forum and Discord perms now. Welcome!
