≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Francis has been beaten, battered, and tossed aside by society. Once he was a social extrovert willing to chat up any and all. Now he hardly speaks a word, too often has he been beaten or berated for an out of line comment. He's passive to whatever life throws at him, where some in the slums of Pittsford are outspoken Francis isn't. He no longer seeks attention as he once did, instead he primarily to himself. Francis has no over-arching goals, no desire to pull himself out of the poverty he's in. He simply wishes for a peaceful existence. It seems that was too much to ask.

Character Motivations
Francis has a stronger bias toward ICLF and their motivations, though as of current is apathetic until things escalate further. Francis lacks over-arcing goals and motivations other than to simply escape the situation he's found himself in. He's driven by his overwhelming need for survival, and minor goal to get back to see his friend Jim Jackson back in Pittsford.

Physical Appearance
Francis is a lean, 150 pound, African American male who dresses in the must functional and available clothing. Once he dressed in a lower-class urban style because of the aesthetic, now he does it out of necessity. Francis is rather gaunt and semi-malnourished. He's gaining his weight back slowly after being inducted into the Ranger Core. Francis's body is covered in tattoos, none seem to have any known gang affiliations. His hair has grown unkempt and unruly, his beard much the same.

Biography
Francis was born on December 12th, 1992 to a house in a poverty ridden house in southern Alabama. With an unfit mother and lack of a father, during his youth he was given over to his grandparents in a more well off home in a predominantly white suburbs in Louisville, Kentucky at the age of 7 years old. While his life would be overall better, Francis had faced much racial discrimination during his years in high school from ironclad beliefs held by the people of Mountain Brook.

From there Francis attended college at Bellarmine University in Louisville during the beginning of the Red Eye outbreak. Early on in the outbreak both of his grandparents died from the virus, and his mother got into a legal battle with Francis over who would inherit the property. As such, when spring break reared it's head Francis stayed in the dorms while most of his classmates left. The infection kicked off during a party hosted by one of the students in the dorms, and Francis was in for the worst night of his life. The entire college was put on lockdown and subjected to both the National Guard and the rising infected inside the college. From there the surviving students were put through trials and tribulations, ending with Francis and his roommate Jim Jackson being the only known survivors to escape the carnage.

After escaping Bellarmine, the two could take on anything. Managing to flee from the inner city, hiding from rising amounts of anarchists and National Guard threats during Operation Sapphire, the two headed east. Chasing after evacuation zone after evacuation zone. Starting with the smoldering remains of Lexington, their hunt continued to north to Cincinnati, then north east toward Columbus. Finding disappointment through each city they ventured to.

Eventually, the men resulted to becoming scavengers and the occasional cat burglar if they stumbled through an empty or seemingly abandoned camp. Never staying in one place too long, the men kept to the roads with just the two of them. Managing to gather a fair few stories along the way, and pick up some tips and tricks in living off the land.

Months turned to years, and years stretched further onto a decade. The two men had nothing to show for it. They floated between groups, never former military, perhaps out of paranoia or a long-held grudge. They weren't out to be heroes or create something great, they merely wished to survive. They lived rough, but they lived none-the-less. Their constant voyage east had never bore any fruit, quite the opposite actually. One particular night Francis and Jim were forced to wade through a thick red mist that surrounded the area outside of Monroe County. Francis managed to fasten some makeshift suits and masks over them. Eventually they reached a place called 'Fairpoint' and sought refuge there. It was quaint, a village that thrived off fishing in the river that flowed through the center of it. The two only planned to stay for a week or so, gathering resources to continue their journey east.

That was until Jim's condition considerably worsened. The scars on his leg re-opened as though he'd gotten some form of scurvy, and each breath he took resulted in a thick cough. So, the two were bound to the village 'till the effects of the red mist passed. Francis took up lodging with sympathetic Fairpointers and found himself in a more simplistic agrarian society. The belief they'd only be there a short time passed after the first two weeks. Francis had to make the difficult transition from nomad to settler. His feelings of being trapped faded with time. Francis put roots in the community after many months, and the two decided to stay even after Jim recovered as much as he could from his affliction.

While Francis resided in one of the smaller villages on the outskirts of Fairpoint's control, even his home eventually was built up into more of a suburb than a village and loosely integrated into the ever-growing Fairpoint faction. Fairpoint's expansion was uncontested, like an unstoppable force. Every unstoppable force must meet its immovable object, and that object was Pittsford. The two were like mirror images, both seeping into the other's so called 'claimed territory'. Pittsford fired the first shot, and the roles changed. Fairpoint took a defensive stance in the war against the aggressive Pittsford. Small raiding parties on Fairpoint's convoys were countered with ambushes on Pittsford supply centers. Taking key political figures hostage to ransom them back off for materials, land, etc.

All the while, Francis managed to avoid the fighting. While closer to the frontline than he preferred, Fairpoint had stretched far beyond the village he first stepped foot in when he entered their territory. The changes were still apparent to him. It wasn't uncommon to hear of someone's friend or family dying in another raid, and the bodies continued to pile up faster and faster as time went on. Prices went up on basic necessities, if it wasn't the war that killed them- economic devastation would. After a year passed of open conflict, entire villages were beginning to be razed in brutal fashion from the infamous Pittsford Rangers. Fairpoint would mount a defense with their own special forces called 'Fairpoint Commandos' who operated in a specialized group, opposed to the more independent focused Rangers.

With each passing day the situation darkened for both communities, vicious raids were done on both sides. Though the cruelty from Dwight Kilean and Larue Monroe could never be matched by Fairpoint, despite their efforts. Eventually Francis's town found itself as the newest addition to the frontlines. The men in the town were told very simply that it would be a days time before any military assistance would arrive and that they had the choice of giving up peacefully or fighting for their town. The stories of villages razed to the ground, despite fighting or not, just to not let Fairpoint have the supplies upon their retreat did not fall on deaf ears in the community. They had decided to fight, fight for a chance at keeping their town alive.

Francis alongside the other men in the village took to fortifying throughout the day, and waiting for Pittsford to come in the night. Francis was given a bolt-action rifle with limited ammo, no body armor, and told to hold until the break of dawn. Many men wouldn't even make it to that next morning. Pittsford's Rangers came under the cover of darkness, and upon seeing the fortifications there wasn't even a man sent out to negotiate terms. The outer fortifications didn't hold long. Blown apart by frag grenades or lit like torches by Molotov cocktails. Francis retreated to hold from the buildings surrounding the inner-most part of town where the elderly, women, children, and disabled resided. Shots were exchanged from each side, the town's few defenses quickly crumpling over the organized Ranger force. The units that survived were pushed further and further into the town.

Driven to the center of town, Francis and several men were left to stand against the conquerors as their doorstep. Dawn was beginning to break, and the men were fighting for their lives in the ruin of the place they once called home. The final building where the remainder of the sick, elderly, women, and children held up, Jim being among them. Those left from the militia had sent a man out to wave the white flag, who was promptly shot moments later. Preparing for the worst, the men readied themselves at the windows and doors of the building. That was when the sounds of mortar fire cracked through the air, followed by the trample of hooves as Fairpoint Commandos lead a counterattack. Driving out the Rangers from the town and saving what was left. General infantry reinforcement eventually came, and those unfit to serve were escorted out. The rest of the surviving militia were offered safe escort to the nearest town... Or to enlist.

Francis had a fire in him, passion, motivations, goals, and life. He enlisted, fought with the Fairpoint army. He started out as a lowly infantry-man, but had aspirations to grow. He fought the good fight and climbed the ladder until he was second-in-command to a squad. Francis had reputation, respect, and honor. But it didn't last. Capitalizing on war only works if you're the winning party. Fairpoint and Pittsford were at a stalemate, though everyone knew that Pittsford had the upper hand with their brutalizing tactics. Even-so, neither could sustain this fight much longer, and if nothing was done they'd kill each other in this fight. Pittsford and Fairpoint dropped hostilities, openly at least. Some Fairpoint Commandos and Pittsford Rangers still skirmished quietly, the most devout of the lot. Francis's unit joined the Commandos on some of those raids, though Francis quickly learned that more war was unlikely.

The unification act was proposed, and Fairpoint left in shambles infrastructurally, economically, and politically, they were quick to accept. Annexation was disguised as relief efforts, but Fairpoint was in no place to argue. This was the beginning of a Coalition between the two, where Pittsford always held the power. It was only a year later when it became a real Coalition, and Pittsford and Fairpoint were joined for good.

With Fairpoint's healthcare policies gone with the new Coalition, Francis was forced to move to Pittsford with Jim to keep him medicated. There were no prospects for a Fairpointer there, and life was tough for those that had to reside in a city they were trying to tear apart only a year ago. Not only could Francis not find work, he was frequently harassed by the locals and former Pittsford veterans. He took to protesting for a time, even aligning himself with some 'Free Fairpoint' terrorist cells. They were all broken up in time, Francis barely managing to escape each time a cell was found. The only place left for someone like Francis and Jim, was the slums.

They lived like animals for years. Treated like shit, constantly looked down upon. Any work they found was fleeting, the only jobs left taking were downright suicidal bounties. They hadn't the means to kill themselves if they wanted to, let alone someone else. Still, it was living. You met all kinds of people, Francis even came into contact with a future political front leader "Marshall Grant" and the two came to know each other fairly well. There was a roof over their heads, even if they didn't own it. It was a dangerous way to live, but most the time if you stayed out of the way of local gangs they had no reason to bother you. Most the time. If you deny their membership invites, they might just kick the shit out of you. So it went for Jim, with fairly superficial injuries it'd be a non-concern for someone that didn't live in the trash and mud. Francis went out to try and haggle for some medication, or need be, "collect" some.

Unfortunately for Francis, a hood sticks out among the nicer areas of Pittsford. His hands weren't fast enough to not end up in cuffs. Despite co-operating all he could, Francis still found himself beaten for the offense. His punishment by all accounts should've been minor, a small stint in a Pittsford jail. Not the best place to be by any means, but survivable with a smaller sentencing. Though his charges were artificially inflated. His sentence growing exponentially, and his means to fight this injustice practically non-existent. He was offered a choice, serve his sentence through conscription with the CPF Ranger Core, or go to a Pittsford prison. He was not keen to take the latter.

So he was put through boot camp, prepared to face hell like a real Ranger. He had very little time to get his goodbyes in order to Jim, not nearly enough. The man made a promise to see him once his sentence was up, and joked that maybe they could finally get a place after all of this was done. Neither of the men laughed. The life of a CPF Ranger can be brutal, and the life a CPF Conscript can be short. Though, Francis hadn't many options really. He heard of the bombing in the city after he was shipped out from Pittsford to Outpost 2-15. It was a helluva lot better than a Canadian Border deployment. That was for sure.

Traveled until finding faction called Fairpoint. Joined said faction and eventually CPF after unification efforts from Pittsford and Fairpoint. Became a slummer in Pittsford after war. After being caught for a petty theft crime, Francis had his charges trumped up and his sentence artificially enhanced and was given the choice of conscription into the CPF Ranger Core or a long sentence in a Pittsford prison. Francis took the conscription and became a CPF Junior Ranger.
