≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Carmen is a complicated woman with a slew of issues stemming from her service in the United States Rangers, and later incidents after being discharged. She is a chronic overachiever who does not feel comfortable in her own skin and is constantly looking to step up the ladder to the next level, and if she's unable to do so, she becomes angry at herself and others. Her confidence is low in that regard, only tipping up if she's able to succeed in what she's doing, it isn't unusual to see her pushing herself to her brink simply to improve herself in a field, whether it be combat or mechanics.

Over the course of the past few years, she has become extremely emotionally withdrawn from any sorts of friends or romantic relationships, a byproduct from her undiagnosed/untreated combat-based PTSD. Carmen is incredibly competitive, remorseless and demanding of those around her, expecting nothing short of perfection which has put a strain on her very sparse romantic relationships.

In her rare romantic relationships, she has become easily jealous of others if her current partner has shown simple interest in another woman and is not unfamiliar with attacking someone, or doing her damndest to make their life hell to keep someone she loves with her.

Physical Appearance
Carmen stands at 5'4" with tanned skin, slick black hair and a sharp, angular face with brown eyes. Physically, she is built athletically, a United States Ranger "Sua Sponte" tattoo on her left arm, and several scars on her body from the car accident.

Biography
Carmen Rosa Alvarez was born on September 16th, 1993 in El Paso, Texas to a family of immigrants, her mother was a waitress and father a mechanic. She put little focus on her education and instead prided herself in being a gear-head and guardian to both of her two little brothers. It wasn’t long until she developed signs of rebellion, disregarding her parent's rules or being sent to detention for beating up someone who insulted her, or her family. As soon as she graduated from high school, she enlisted in the United States Army.

Carmen was shipped off to Fort Benning, near Colombus Georgia for BCT. It was clear to her from word go that she had her cards stacked against her from both her shorter height and gender alone. She, however, had willpower like no other and an iron-headed determination to succeed. Once she met the drill sergeant—Dwight Kilean—responsible for her training throughout BCT, she was put through rigorous training exercises for the next twenty-two weeks. In this time, many of the male recruits belittled and harassed her in an attempt to break her resolve. She would eventually graduate from the program and further her studies as an infantryman, finally being assigned to the 16th Infantry Regiment or Iron Rangers within the well-storied 1st Infantry Divison or Big Red One.

She felt nothing but immense pride after her tremendous amounts of work ended up paying off, and even more when she was shipped off to Afghanistan along with the rest of the Iron Rangers. But, as time went on, and eventually years went by, it was replaced with a feeling of longing. Her position within the United States Army was not one that she wanted, most of her tenure had been spent with operations involving Afghan village stability and guard duty between the numerous loads of red-tape restricting her from throwing her name into the hat for Special Operations Groups, or even simply moving to the frontlines and seeing combat as a woman.

Come to the end of twenty fourteen, Carmen had reached her rope and was on the verge of pulling for reassignment towards the end of her contract so that she could return and see her family, but a law would be passed allowing for her to see combat in an infantry role. A couple of months later, and she was serving on the frontlines in an offensive role along with the rest of her regiment in varying operations countering on-going terrorist efforts. By the end of the year, she had seen numerous friends die and claimed enough life to garner a mixture of self-doubt and depression—it all hit her like a freight train—and she coped with it by trying her hardest to push herself to the next level. It’s all that helped her through that last year before a new goal came into sight. The 75th Rangers Regiment, a storied Special Operations Group that her drill instructor boasted about in his off-time, and one that never left the back of her mind. At that point, only two women had been accepted into the storied group, and she was determined to become the third—she tossed her name into the hat and patiently waited, being brought in for Ranger School a few months later after her assignment led her back to the United States.

Carmen returned to Fort Benning, Georgia for her training a few weeks before fall. She had heard rumors of the program, RASP (Ranger Assessment and Selection Program) during her service with the Iron Rangers, and she knew it was going to be a completely different animal to conquer compared to her BCT scores. The course was designed to smoke through recruits within the first weeks and weed out those who were not physically fit, or mentally fit enough to become a ranger. From there, she would go through the Cole Range, a gruesome course which pushed even her to her absolute breaking point between only being allowed four hours of sleep, and numerous positions and assignments in the dead of night. By the time she reached the end of the course, she had gone through eight weeks of sheer hell but managed to come out on top and become credited as the third woman to ever complete the grueling course to become a Ranger.

The next four years were spent responding to various counter-terrorism operations in Afghanistan alongside the Afghan government. Her first assignment, Operation Freedom’s Sentinel occurred in November of 2015 where she was shipped out in a company of Rangers as part of the Post ISAF phase of the war to destroy an al-Qaeda training camp. The fatalities during the said operation were never released to the public, over thirty insurgents were dispatched and a single casualty suffered on the side of the Rangers. The next phase of Freedom’s Sentinel would take place numerous years later in April of 2017 when fifty rangers, including Carmen, joined forty Afghan commandos to conduct a joint US-Afghan operation/raid on the headquarters of Abdul Hassib, the Emir of ISIS-K, in a village in the Achin Distract of Nangarhar Province. The force was flown into Mohamed Valley and within minutes were engaged in a grueling close-quarter firefight. Support in the form of AC-130 gunships, Apache helicopters, F-15 fighters, and drones were called in to support the firefight with ISIL-KP militants. By the end of the traumatic three-hour conflict, 35 ISIL-KP militants, including Abdul Hassib were killed, along with three rangers - two of which went through RASP with Carmen, and were close friends with her.

A few months later, Carmen would be honorably discharged from the United States Army after completing her contract to fulfillment and moves back to El Paso, Texas for three months before deciding that the next logical step in her life would be to study to become an LEO (Law Enforcement Officer). Early on in her initial courses, she would be struck by an oncoming car after leaving a bar late at night and hospitalized with critical injuries that would come close to claiming her life. Fortunately, she would manage to pull through the injury but be disqualified from her current course for several months during her recovery process, but allowed to return so long that she could pass a physical exam and still perform to her prior standards. Distraught, and sunken with depression, Carmen went on for the next few months with slow progress from a mixture of lingering pain in her upper-arms, and an inability to lift them above her head from lasting damage. She knew that she was unable to meet her own standards, and she knew she was unable to do that in the amount of time that she desired—which was half of the estimated recovery time, as a result, she started doubling her doses of opioids in order to combat the pain and push herself back up and back into training early. By the time she was seemingly back in top-physical condition was surprisingly early, a month early in-fact. Carmen managed to put on an expert disguise, acting like a normal functional person despite her new-found potent addiction to opioids and managed to breeze through the course with relative ease, managing to get her proper qualifications in the next several months.

She would start her first duty assignment in mid-2018 in San Antonio, Texas but would later request transfer to Haven, Texas following a confrontation with a suspect, and her then partner. The next couple of months would be quiet with Carmen coping with numerous psyche issues, her battle with addiction in the form of opioids that she did not want to stop, and feeling of a lack of purpose. It was only at the start of the outbreak that she found something new to latch onto—protect her family, and survive. She arrived at a quarantine zone where she met Jonathan Walsh and the rest of her group, escaping with them later on and remaining on the road for the next several weeks.

(I can expand on that, but I really don't know tons of information on how we all met. We left it vague)
