Born into a military family, Joel's career was already set in stone for him by his family; to follow in the footsteps of his ancestors and enlist in the Marines, just as his father had served in the Gulf, his grandfather in Korea and his great-grandfather in the Pacific. He enlisted as early as he could, becoming a fully-fledged Marine in 2011. He served one tour in Iraq and two in Afghanistan before being selected to go through the rigorous Force Recon training pipeline in 2012. He graduated from training in 2013, choosing to pursue an MOS as a Scout Sniper, and was assigned to a platoon upon graduation.
