≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Biography
Herbert Case was born May 24, 2000 and raised in Ferndale, Michigan. He lived an orthodox life for a child before the outbreak, until his world was upended in 2015 with the start of the Red-Eye pandemic. He witnessed society crumble and fall apart in the blink of an eye as the virus swiftly spread. Soon, he was forced from his home alongside his six brothers, mother, and father in an attempt to reach his Uncle's farm in Buffalo for safety. The harrowing journey saw the demise of several members of his family, apart from four of his brothers and his father who survived the trip.

The family maintained shelter at the farm as best they could. However, the worsening disaster eventually compelled them back on the road. This time, they traveled with a large caravan of refugees also seeking aid. Over the grueling span of several months, the refugee convoy navigated its way to Fairport, New York. There, they collaborated to establish a communal settlement and gradually reinforced defenses, building a true safe-haven over the ensuing years. Herbert worked the land as a farmer alongside his parents, embracing a simple life but finding solace in the close-knit community.
All of that changed when the Coalition arrived, aggressively seeking to annex the fertile agricultural lands of Fairport for their own gains. They forcefully removed villagers from their homes, initiating bombing campaigns on the outskirts of town to suppress any signs of resistance. During one such bombing, two of Herb's brothers tragically lost their lives as their farmhouse was leveled. He and the others had narrowly survived only by taking shelter in the root cellar below. Filled with anger and profound grief over the loss of his brothers, Herbert joined with the rest of his surviving brothers and others from Fairport who had also lost loved ones to the Coalition's brutal tactics. Together they opposed the Coalition's unlawful occupation of their village through any means necessary.

They formed an underground resistance cell to strike strategically against the occupying Coalition forces through carefully planned raids and sabotage operations. For over a year, Herb and his comrades evaded capture as they harassed enemy supply lines and outposts from their secret encampments deep within the surrounding forests. All the while, they defended their beloved community through guerrilla tactics against the occupying army's repressive control. However, their success was not to last, as Coalition forces eventually pinned them down in the Fairport government building during a siege. A prolonged assault accompanied by a ferocious artillery barrage marked the end of their resistance. Against all odds, Roach emerged as the sole survivor from the bloody battle that had killed most of the other fighters, including all but one of his brothers. Gravely injured, he was captured by the invading Coalition forces. Through forced negotiations, the villagers of Fairport were absorbed into the Coalition to form the Coalition of Pittsford and Fairport that left Pittsford lording over the other side, electing their own officials to take over their government.

Nearly three years have now passed in Coalition service for Herb, granted release from military servitude as a conscript when they put out a call for able-bodied men. Stories of his survival against impossible odds had spread, earning him the moniker "Roach." Now, as a battle-hardened Ranger serving under the Korshunov regime, Roach seizes the opportunity to embark on the government-sanctioned expedition into Texas. Hoping to find valuable resources to aid the war efforts, also while secretly working as a spy for the Inner-Cities Liberation Front, an organized resistance group the Coalition is currently standing against.
