Biography
Cross was a born historian. His father was a doctor of medieval history, and his mother was a librarian. They were tough but fair, encouraging him to pursue their careers. His high school years were rough and tumble, but he made it out relatively unscathed and with high scores. His college years were more tame, and he spent much of his time studying and writing, to his friends' chagrin. He graduated with high marks at 22, but he found himself in a pickle: there was little real way to make any money unless he actually distinguished himself in his studies. That was incredibly difficult. So, to avoid going broke, he decided to enlist in the military despite its ailing reputation as the Vietnam War was just winding down. His parents were worried, but he knew he would be fine.
Flying out to one of many training camps across the country, Cross was worried. Those worries were quickly dashed, as it was proven that he was a natural shooter and a gifted tactician — probably all those history books, his superiors figured. Unfortunately — or maybe, fortunately — Cross didn't get the chance to prove himself as U.S. forces extracted from Vietnam while he was still in basic training. Cross didn't mind. He was happy not to die in that jungle. Gradually, Cross began to find purpose in the military, and as he got more experienced, higher-ups began to take note. Cross was recommended to join one of the country's many elite regiments and underwent significant physical training. He took to it like a fish to water and thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent training. Despite this newfound enthusiasm, Cross never forgot his History background and regularly read and researched various historical topics. Eventually, in his readings, he became interested in the small towns of Walker and Dewitt and decided to visit the next time he was on leave...
