Biography
Jalen Locklear was born in the Wind River reservation in 1955,both of his parents members of the Shoshone tribe. Right from the start, Jalen was forced to adapt to living in a rather small multi-generational house-As the oldest son, he saw his 3 younger siblings being born,along with his parents and grandparents both having less and less space to themselves.
In spite of that and their poverty, no abuse fell upon Jalen and his siblings, and the adults always made sure that they could at least get one meal a day, and be able to go to school. That didn't mean the household was devoid of problems,though. The living conditions were rough,with the house structure itself being in the middle of complete collapse. His parents and grandparents argued a lot,mainly about their financial situation,as well as the amount of people living in the house in the first place. Jalen never listened to those arguments too much,mainly focusing on helping around the house, with his siblings, as well as trying to do his best at school.Due to that, he had to grow up fast.
He also never really felt close to either of his parents-They were busy people, and while Jalen knew that they cared about all of them ,it was still hard to get attached. Instead, he took comfort in his grandma and grandpa,both very much eager to tell him about their culture.His grandpa specifically was knowledgable about archery, and Jalen found it to be a very strong bonding point. The feeling of holding the bow in his hands, pulling back the string and arrow, concentrating, pausing his breath,just to release the arrow and hit the target....It felt very, strangely satisfying tohim.
Jalen continued being one of the top students, cramming as much as possible in order to get good grades-While he did in fact appreciate his culture much more because of his grandparents, he still despised the poverty of the reservation,as well as their living situation. He spent most of his time at school, with Jalen's time at home mainly consisting of learning more archery, as well as taking care of his siblings, now much more grown up.
Time passed, he kept getting good grades, until he eventually earned a tuition-Allowing for Jalen to go to college,planning for a degree in psychology. He said goodbye to his family, knowing for better or worse that this will probably be the last time he sees his grandparents in-person. Still, he went forward, planning to support his family with money as soon as he got a job.
Early days of college were more than tough for him,though. He experienced casual racism from his peers and dorm-mates,but instead of caving in, he began working even harder because of sheer spite. Wanting to distance himself from his days in the reservation, he changed his first name to Jason, leaving the boy he was behind.
He slowly began making actual friends, mainly due to his pleasant but honest attitude, as well as his insistance on joining several archery competitions, happy to talk to other competitors. Those archery contests soon become one of the best way for Jason to earn money for himself-The training he recieved from his grandpa,along with his own practice sessions, made it much easier for him to concentrate and hit the target compared to the others. Much of the money went towards his living expenses, as well as towards his family-But he did save up enough to get a car for himself,eventually.
Today,Jason is an accomplished young adult about to finish his degree,adamant about it being possible to get oneself out of any bad situation, as long as the person struggling has enough mental strength.Confident,polite, but perhaps a bit detached and cold at times, Jason is making a quick stop in order to refuel, grab a bite to eat,sleep inside of his car for a while-Before he continues driving to his college,right after he has won yet another archery compeition.
Even if he is unaware of the events that are about to unfold, he will fight tooth and nail to preserve a life he has worked on for so long.
