≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Biography
Isaiah Young was born in Houston, Texas to a single mother. His childhood was difficult for him, and he was constantly surrounded by gang violence and drug crime in his neighborhood. Isaiah mainly kept his head down, hanging out with his friends and goofing around. He tried his best to keep away from all the crime that occured, simply minding his own business. He struggled academically, particularly in reading. The words always seemed to move around when he tried to read them, but he didn’t bother anybody by telling them that. Besides, he figured nobody would care. He got tired of feeling stupid at school all the time, so he eventually stopped going. He’d spend his days smoking pot and drinking 40s with his friends, just goofing off.

At 17, he managed to get a job delivering pizzas. He liked it, he’d smoke a blunt and drive around listening to music, raking in the tips. It wasn’t enough to buy a house or anything, but he was fine staying with his mom. He kept this lifestyle up for two years, before his routine suddenly go turned upside down. Isaiah got pulled over. Granted, he was high, but he was also pretty damn sure he hadn’t broke any traffic laws. Still, desperately he reached for some febreeze he kept underneath the seat, spraying it in an attempt to mask the smell.

The Officer noticed this, of course, and instantly asked Isaiah to step out of the vehicle. He searched it, finding a dime bag of weed in the glove compartment. The Officer was very aggressive about his find, approaching Isaiah rapidly and loudly. Isaiah rushed to put his hands up just as his mom had taught him, but he accidentally grazed the Officer with his fingers as he did so. The Officer took out his nightstick, hitting the kid with it a few times before arresting him and taking him to jail. Isaiah figured he’d be out real quick. It was a dime bag, nothing serious, just a misdemeanor. Sure, he’d get probation, but it was all going to be okay.

Isaiah was wrong. He was called into an office at the jail after spending three days there to find a Deputy District Attorney waiting for him. He was asked if he wanted a lawyer but Isaiah shook his head. What was the point? It was just a misdemeanor, it’d all work out fine.

He was informed the county was going to press charges against him for assaulting an Officer, resisting arrest, and drug possession. Isaiah was shocked. He was told the maximum sentence was 20 years. Isaiah, who wasn’t even 20 yet himself, couldn’t even begin to fathom that duration of time. Terrified, he was then told that the county was going to give him a special offer. All he had to do was plead guilty to resisting arrest and possession and they’d drop the assault charge. Isaiah would only have to serve 3 years instead of 20. Three sounded a whole hell of a lot better than twenty, and the terrified kid desperately and quickly agreed to their terms.

Prison wasn’t easy for him. Isaiah was of smaller stature and as he spent most of his life trying to avoid the criminal world, he found himself isolated when surrounded by it. He was victimized a bit at first, but sooner or later he let his natural sense of humor and extroverted nature out, and the other inmates began to like the young man well enough. Still, it was very unpleasant for the kid.

When things went bad, Isaiah was just three months away from the end of his sentence. None of the inmates knew what was going on, but the guards did. A lot of them left but one guard made the decision to lock the inmates up with enough food to keep them going for a few weeks, only in his panic he didn’t plan the operation at all. He wheeled a cart of food down, starting with Isaiah’s cell. The kid was confused, asking what the hell was going on as the guard placed enough food and water to last two people two weeks into his cell. That said, Isaiah’s cellmate was out in the yard so it was just him. The guard, without responding, promptly shut the cell door and locked it.

It was at that moment that a riot alarm went off. The guard quickly began to shut people into their cells, locking them in without any food or water as to prevent them from participating in the riot. After locking about 9 inmates in, one of them still not secured decided he wanted to participate in this riot. Emboldened by him, the other inmates bolted out of their cells, kicking the shit out of the guard and running out.

Isaiah had no idea what was going on. However, he heard horrible moans which were followed by sounds of screaming. Finally, things quieted down but the moans didn’t. Isaiah and the others waited for somebody to come let them out. Nobody came. Soon, people began to get thirsty. They yelled at Isaiah to give them some water. He tried, but he was given a blue barrel full of the stuff which couldn’t fit through the bars. He tried opening a can of food, pouring water in and squeezing it through the bars… but that wouldn’t fit either. So they waited for somebody to come and let them out.

Two days passed but nobody came. Isaiah hadn’t drank any water, as he felt badly that he was the only one who had any. But he was starting to get really thirsty and it was right there, staring at his face. As he was staring at the barrel contemplating his choices, the moans that they’ve been incessantly hearing began to rile up and the inmates finally got to see where they were coming from as about a dozen monstrous creatures flooded into their cell block. One of the inmates screamed at them to let him out, putting his hands on the bars. The creature approached and, shockingly, bit the man’s hand! Horrified, he pulled away and everybody backed up from their bars as they shouted to be let out.

Nobody could sleep that night. The sound of the monsters was horrible and many of them were pulling at the bars as if trying to get at the inmates. It made it next to impossible to get rest. Isaiah noticed the man who had been bitten looked ill, his forehead glistening with sweat. People now severely dehydrated started to yell at Isaiah, begging him for water and when he was unable to provide it, damning him to hell. He was threatened to be killed, raped, tortured, everything imaginable if he didn’t give them water. He kept trying, dehydrated himself as he still hasn't drank any water.

By day four, he couldn’t take it anymore. He gave in and took a sip of water. One of the other inmates noticed this and screams and curses were riled his way by the survivors. All but the bitten man, who laid on his bed moaning in pain.

Day five was shocking. The bitten man stopped moving entirely and appeared dead… until he got back up and starting moaning like the others, pulling at the bars. Still, nobody had slept more than an hour under the horrible sounds of the moans. People were experiencing the end stages of dehydration. Many were dying, a couple were already dead. One was still weakly cursing Isaiah, telling him he’d burn in hell. None of the others still had the capacity to talk.

Day six he drank more water. His biological impulse to do so was simply too strong to resist. 7 of the other inmates were dead. One was barely clinging to life, in the end stages of dehydration. The last one seemed like he still had a little fight left in him, but it wouldn’t be long. By that night, it was just Isaiah and one other inmate. Isaiah looked at the man, openly sobbing as he opened a can of food. The effects of starvation were starting to affect the kid and he couldn’t resist. “I’m sorry,” he pleaded. The other inmate was too weak to muster a response.

By the next morning, it was just Isaiah, the dead, and the monsters. He still couldn’t sleep with the sounds of the moans and the creatures pulling at the bars to his cage. Occasionally he’d look to the inmate who had become one of them. He drank some water and ate some food.

Three days later he began to contemplate taking his own life. The cans could easily do the trick, they had sharp edges when he opened them.

Now, thirteen days since this endeavor has begun, Isaiah sits locked in his cell with his food and his water, surrounded by dead and monsters, seriously contemplating suicide as he slips farther into insanity, still unable to rest in this Hell in which he has found himself.

He just wants to sleep.
