≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Describe your roleplay experience.
I starting roleplaying, or at least, in theory, with San Andreas Multiplayer Mod, which boasted a large number of roleplay servers, back in 2013. The server I was on was a "low RP" level server, which honestly, had a lot of toxicity and people who flat out didn't roleplay, leading to a lot of OOC conflict with many people who were on the server just to shoot and KOS people, with, people spamming robbery hotkeys in order to get an excuse to murder people. So, it wasn't a very good place to be. I left in mid 2015, once I got tried of the crap people pulled on the server.

So, eventually, I got into offline roleplay, and was with my community college's table top roleplaying group from 2017 to late 2018. I unfortunately, couldn't make games anymore due to be transferring to a four year school, where, I tried to connect with the local gaming community here, but a lot of the games I participated in fell through for one reason or another, unfortunetly.

So, I eventually created an account New Dawn RP in late... 2018 I think (Mid-2018, just checked the account creation date.) however, I didn't join in, unfortunately, due to my social anxiety. I eventually pressed, checking the site every now and again, debating if I should create a character or not until I eventually just decided to take a leap of faith and do it when I learned that What We Become was starting in March 2019. I've been here ever since.

Have you ever been involved in roleplay leadership and/or creating a lore?
I did DM a game of Vampire: The Masquerade a year or so ago for my college group. I will say that I learned many lessons from that experience. Most importantly, that, DMing in general, should be more about the players fun, then the DMs fun, and that you shouldn't say no or tell the player that they cannot do something if they can feasibly do it. Sure, at the end of the day, there may be consequences to their actions, but you shouldn't second guess or tell the player no.

The exceptions to the "no telling players no" rule are obvious, mostly in the realms of dealing in player interactions with other players, a stricter set of rules should be adopted to make sure that it's fair and cause undo OOC conflict. Another exception is with actions that could be considered power gaming.

Not saying no, doesn't mean that said actions, that obviously wouldn't work, would still work if tried, and you should still let them try it, and let them deal with the consequences of their actions.

A lot of the same concepts, in my opinion, transfer over to Project Zomboid Roleplay in many ways, in regards to player actions and roleplay, and they should be allowed as much freedom as possible, with A. Ruining RP for other people, and B. Violating Server Rules.

Have you ever been an admin on an online game? if so, for what groups and for how long?
For an online game? Unfortunately not. This is where my experience is lacking in many respects. I am a mod of a gaming focused discord, for people who play Grand Strategy Games by Paradox Interactive, but it is a small group and I'm more of a chat moderator if anything.

Do you have any skills that could help the team?
I feel like I can help the team on the writing side, as I do enjoy fictional writing, even if it's not...the best at time. That could be a bit... self critical, but I'm a very self critical person. I honestly, do really like world building, and creating characters, even if it is just an NPC for people to shoot at.

I also think my activity is a benefit for the team, as I am regularly active on the server whenever I can. I'd likely be on my admin account while doing other things, in case someone needs admin assistance.

Finally, I'm going to plug the work I've been doing on my map, because I really like it and I think it can be a skill I can bring to the team, that being, knowledge of WorldEd and TileZed tools to build worlds. I also really proud of the work I've been doing, though work on the map will likely slow down as classes start.

What do you think you may need to improve upon in terms of being an admin?
Honestly, this is where I get massively self critical, which, in all honestly, may not be the best skill to have, so.. let's make that number 1.

Number 2 is the fact that, on a few occasions, I've gotten mad a bit OOCly over something that happened ICly, or at the very least, get upset. For examples, and interaction between my self and Miles' player over not letting us leave the Mall. I took it a bit to far, and, I did apologize once I calmed down, but, that incident should've happened in the first place.

Number 3, is likely that, sometimes, my writing and roleplay can come off as... lacking, in a certain word. At least, that might just be the self criticism talking, but I sometimes feeling like my RP is sometimes just bad., and I hope, that, even just playing I can improve it.

Finally, I am rather outspoken by my opinions, which sometimes leads me to butt heads with people if I disagree with them. That might be a strength, it might be a detriment, but I guess it depends on the situation.

If you had to suggest a change to the way things are done on Gateway, what would it be?
Honestly, the reason I'm applying since it seems, that, at the moment, there isn't many admins on for late night PST, even when there are normally 7 or 8 people on at these times. I'm usually a night owl and would be willing to help provide coverage for these times.

But, I will say that, I do think the current admin team is doing a good job running the server at the moment, and there isn't much that could, in my opinion, that could be done to make it better. Maybe it's that New Lore Smell talking, but I do have a feeling that there are good things to come.
