Biography
Maria was born in the City of Sabinas Hidalgo in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon in April of 2003. He mother Guadalupe Ruiz, worked as a Cashier in a local convenience store, while her father, Raul Ordonez, worked as a factory worker at the local cannery.
However, when Maria was seven, the cannery closed, a result of the Great Recession. Her father, Raul, made the decision to go to the United States to look for work. Maria has seen him few times since then, mostly when both her and her mother traveled to the United States to visit him, as it was too risky for him to return home to Mexico since he didn't have a visa.
Raul would send money home, with the occasional gift. One of the last letters Maria received was in March 2019, containing a cross necklace he bought her for her 16th birthday.
When the outbreak started in May, Maria was at school when she received a panicked phone call from her mother, saying she was attacked, where she then rushed home, only to find her mother on the couch with a bite wound on her arm. After several hours, it became apparent her mother's condition was getting worse, so Maria attempted to get her to the hospital, only to find them overcrowded. Eventually, Guadalupe felt herself slipping, and asked Maria to promise to find her father. She agreed as she watched her mother die in the passenger seat of the car.
And then........she came back.
Maria doesn't like to reminisce about what happened next, but... she counts it as a miracle that she wasn't bit by her own mother. While, she regrets it now, Maria booked it after her own mother tried to murder her. If there was one regret she has from the beginning of the outbreak, it would be not putting her mother down, though, she questions if she would be strong enough now.
As the world crumbled, Maria attempted to hitchhike north to the border, though, she walked a lot of the way, she did find many others going to same way, wondering if the United States was safer as a result of the outbreak. Eventually, she and the group she was with crossed the completely abandoned border crossing into the United States, leading to questions over the US' safety. While some turned back, Maria remembered her promise and pressed onward.
The last letter mentioned that her father was doing some farm work near Joan's Hollow, so, that's where she headed....
