≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Biography
Lawrence Grant grew up in Fayetteville, NC - being born to a military father and a working mother on the 9th of September, 1985. His father being on base at Fort Bragg most of the time, combined with his mothers unforgiving hours meant he rarely got to see his parents - instead, he was thrust into a supervisory role for his two younger siblings, brother and sister respectively. Everything changed when his father died almost as soon as Lawrence had turned 13 - the coroner said it was unavoidable; unforeseeable, and that a problem with his genetics had caused a freak heart attack - something Lawrence could look forward to, at least. His mother was thrust head-first into a deep depression - losing her job, being overdue on almost every bill, combined with three hungry mouths to feed - times were tough. Only way Lawrence knew how to make money was the same way all his friends older brothers could afford the new Jordans soon as they came on the shelf - that street shit. So, following some deliberation, Lawrence went to his best friend - a boy a few years older than him called Antoine who had always looked out for him, and asked to be put on. Antoine tried to reason with Lawrence - but it wasn't any use, and soon, Lawrence had fallen into the wrong crowd.By the time he had turned 18, Lawrence had kept the family afloat for years - everyone knew where the money came from, and his mother grew to despise him for it - but they still ate the food he put on the table, the clothes he put on their backs. He barely graduated, but, when he did - he made a decision. He wanted out. Lawrence cut contact with all his former friends and associates - struggling with the pain he'd caused just to make a few dollars. He made a decision - impulse, maybe stupid; but he did it nonetheless.

Lawrence couldn't have imagined what Iraq would be like - none of the training in the world could have prepared him for the chaos and tragedy he saw wrought by war in the streets of Baghdad soon after the 'liberation' - fighting for loaves of bread, sniper fire dominating the streets during the day - children's emergency rations being stolen by mobs of dissatisfied Iraqi military age men - .. reminded him of home, in a way. He did his fair share of fighting during the occupation - staying on for two 12 month deployments back to back; the time he spent in Iraq put things in perspective for Lawrence - everything he had known up to that point was small - tiny, even, and all his troubles back home were petty in comparison to the suffering wrought upon the cradle of civilisation by constant warfare and destruction. It took him a long time to readjust to life as a civilian, a year after he got back - he moved to Brooklyn, using the last of his pay on a decent apartment, getting a job in a nearby restaurant washing dishes. Lawrence struggled to make rent every month - but he always found a way. There were a number of times he nearly slipped into his old routines, some others he considered going back to the army. Those thoughts were soon put to rest however when he met his future wife - Monique. Monique and Lawrence married two years later.

A year after that, Lawrence rejoined the army - shipping off to Afghanistan - coming home a new man. He was offered an opportunity by a local Juvenile Detention Centre to speak to some at-risk young offenders, and, after some goading by his wife - he went. Turned out he had a knack for getting on a level with bad kids, and was offered a permanent position at the institution. It ran like clockwork under Lawrence's soft yet firm grip - each delinquent offered the same respect by Lawrence as they were expected to give each other - and the facility benefited for it with a lot of the young boys and men set straight by Lawrence's counselling.April of 2017. Monique had been diagnosed with Leukemia in January - and things were looking up. She was healthier, and Lawrence could go in to work several days a week. Monique went into remission around November, and the two celebrated with a big thanksgiving - both of their families came up to Brooklyn. Unfortunately, the good times are usually followed by the bad.

In late May of 2019, Monique took a turn for the worst - being hospitalised after a particularly nasty fall, Lawrence knew what was coming. The two had always wanted to see the world - and so, when she finally passed on the 10th of June, Lawrence settled on scattering her ashes on the top of Mount Everest - the best place he could think she could see the world from. He boarded a plane to Heathrow with her urn in his carry-on the week after the funeral with a clear goal in mind.

Nothing goes to plan. The oxygen masks deployed, and the plane rattled violently as it plummeted for the ocean. Lawrence adopted a bracing position, waiting for the inevitable.
