≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Gavin is an aggressive, emotionally repressed man. He is rather aimless in life and has no clear grasp of his goals or desires for the future. He never was taught to think ethically, but he does try to follow his gut feeling of what seems "right" or "wrong." However, as he was raised by abuse, his understanding of morality is often skewed and erratic. He definitely has a sense of empathy that guides his behavior, but it is very suppressed. Gavin is not a friendly person and more than likely not somebody you'd like to be around. That said, he happens to be very well cut out for this new world order that seems to be forming. Used to being abused by the world around him, he is well equipped to handle whatever is thrown at him without having to take the time to adapt that many others would. It's that time of adaptation that often gets you killed and Gavin has a leg up in that regard. Furthermore, he is a very self-sufficient and capable man, accustomed to living off the land in a way that will surely prove to make him an invaluable member to any group. Maybe so valuable that he'll be welcomed in spite of his aggressive and unfriendly personality.

Character Motivations
Gavin is very aimless in life. He isn't motivated by much other than his own self-interest, although he does have a repressed sensitive side that might come to the surface if he is with the right people. His goals are similarly ill-defined and amorphous. Surely, if he had some kind of therapy he'd likely determine his goal is to work past the immense traumas of his life to become a functional, perhaps even happy, member of a community. But, unfortunately, he lacks the knowledge to even be fully cognizant of that desire.

Physical Appearance
Gavin is a large man. He stands at 6'0" and has a stout build, weighing in at 180 lbs and being quite muscular. He is a rather handsome man, with darker hair and hazel eyes. However, he often puts little care into his appearance and comes off as dirty and ragged.

Biography
Gavin Holloway was born in the hollers of Eastern Kentucky on May 9, 1983 to John and Lenore Holloway. His older brother Billy was born four years prior. His father used to work the coal mines before abhorrent working conditions caused him to get radicalized by isolated hill people in the mountains of Appalachia where he moved his family just months after Gavin was born, completing cutting themselves off from society. Gavin was raised among these people, receiving no formal education besides extremely basic reading, writing, and arithmetic by his mother. They lived largely off the land, hunting, raising livestock, and farming as much as the rather arrid mountain soil allowed. Gavin participated in these hunting trips from a very young age, where they all used bows to avoid having to go into town to buy bullets. Gavin’s father was a particularly aggressive and abusive drunk, beating his wife and sons often. Billy often tried to protect Gavin from the worst of his father’s attacks and took great care in compassionately looking after his little brother. John, an aggressive man that he was, came into conflict with the leaders of his community and eventually after a bitter dispute, took his family and left their small mountain town. It turned out to be perfect timing too, as not long after a small coal vein was discovered in their mountain and, after the people refused to leave, the ATF came in and arrested them all for illegal moonshine production and distribution. The leader of the community was killed in the raid after opening fire on the agents.

Gavin, now 9 years old and living in a society he had never known, was forced to go to public school. His lack of previous education made this extremely difficult for him and he struggled significantly in classes. He was often told by teachers and other students alike that he was stupid. Truthfully, Gavin was significantly more insightful than most kids his age, but his utter lack of previous education made it difficult for him to express those insights. John additionally struggled with the transition, now working an actual job for the first time in almost a decade. Unwilling to go back to the brutal conditions of the Eastern Kentucky coal mines, he worked as an hourly day laborer where he mainly hauled heavy loads of lumber for carpenters. After pulling his back on the job, he got an opiate prescription where he promptly got addicted. His beatings on his family got worse when he struggled to get more pills and Lenore, unable to transition back to society herself, simply packed up and left one night while the family was asleep. Gavin never got to say goodbye, nor did he ever see her again. After she left, the beatings usually reserved for her transferred to Gavin and Billy, however Billy didn’t cease his efforts to take the brunt of their father’s rage in the name of Gavin’s protection.

John didn’t make enough money to keep up with his addiction and his rent and the family ultimately got evicted from their home. However, after only a week of being homeless, the Holloway family got perhaps their only bout of good luck. John’s father, who Gavin had never met, died of heart disease and left his small hunting cabin in Western Kentucky to John. The family moved into the cabin, however it was too far from John’s work for him to be able to keep the job so he intended to quit. However, true to form, he instead picked a fight with his boss getting himself fired. The cabin was rather far from the nearest town, but Billy was now driving and made sure Gavin got to school everyday so he could continue getting a basic education. John worked as a freelance hunter, selling his kills to the local butchers. John found satisfaction in the work and he gradually started to decrease his dependence on opiates. Both Billy and Gavin often helped their father in his hunts.

Right after Gavin started high school he experienced perhaps the greatest upset of his life to date. Billy, tired of his father’s beatings and abuse, joined the Army without so much as telling Gavin and left the family much in the same way his mother had years ago. The only people in his life have now either abused or abandoned him, very much shaping his sense of self. Eventually, Billy wrote home apologizing for how he left. The two stayed in touch for a while, with Gavin diligently and quickly responding to any letter he received. But soon enough, Billy stopped writing back.

In his older age, John began to mellow out. He would still beat Gavin, but the frequency of the abuse decreased. Gavin continued going to high school for a little while, driving himself in the car Billy left behind, but he didn’t end up graduating. He lived a quiet, miserable life in his dad’s hunting cabin, helping him on his hunts and selling the kills to the butcher. He picked up on his father’s drinking habit and found he too was an angry drunk. As John began to weaken in his older age and Gavin began to pack on muscle, he’d hit back if his father tried anything. Soon enough, his father realized he couldn’t pick on his boy anymore. When Gavin returned from a hunting trip in his mid twenties, his father was waiting there with his a hole blown in his skull from an old revolver. He had killed himself.

Gavin didn’t have much of a life after that. He lived mostly in isolation, occasionally going to the town bar and picking fights which culminated in many small stints in the county jail. He continued to hunt from a crossbow as he had originally learned how to do back in the hills, both out of preference and saving money on bullets. He began contemplating the notion of his miserable, aimless existence. This contemplation gave rise to curiosity and ultimately culminated in him buying some books. He began to read as a hobby, something he never would’ve imagined himself doing. When the news of the virus hit, Gavin was intrigued. It sounded like something that would be in one of his novels and he was excited about the opportunity to shake up his isolated and depressing existence. He got the news of the evacuation center, but being raised where he was instilled a deep-seated distrust of government so he avoided heading that direction despite it being classified as mandatory. Instead, he sits in his miserable cabin, crossbow by his bed, waiting to see how this situation unfolds.

Would you like your character to start with any items?
Crossbow w/ bolts. In reality, he'd likely only have around 25 bolts however Hydrocraft is such that bolts often disappear after you shoot them instead of appearing in the deceased zombie's item pile as they're supposed to. Due to this, I'd be highly appreciative if you gave me around 50 to make up for that fact with the caveat he only has around two dozen ICly and the others are there to OOCly replenish stores that despawn.

Hunting Knife

a .38 caliber revolver w/ bullets (if the crossbow doesn't count as a gun, if it does then forget this.)

Big hiking bag with pouches

canteen

a small supply of canned food with a can opener

pickup truck w/ keys (preferably a beaten up, old one)

meat grinder (for making sausages)

lighter

carton of cigarettes

whiskey

I'd also like to request skill points so Gavin's IC skills are appropriately reflected by the things he'll be able to do in game. These would be the required skill points for hunting (mainly trapping, cooking, and foraging) and other skills reflecting his ability to live off the land.

Furthermore, I would humbly request you give me additional skill points in aiming and reloading. Gavin has been bow hunting all his life, from a very young age. I would like this skill to be reflected by him primarily combating zombies with his crossbow. Given the shoddy aiming mechanics, this would require a very high aim / reload level. I do not intent to abuse these skill points to shittily kill other players with little IC justification but rather to combat zombies in a way that fits his character. I feel that my many past years of roleplaying show that I almost always try to add to the server, the lore, and the roleplay of others through my own roleplay and hope you can trust that I'd do the same thing with Gavin if given the privilege of my requested skill boosts.

Either way, thanks for your consideration!

Heya, Cascade! I've reviewed your application and it's accepted!

Here's your login info:
Username: Gavin Holloway
Password: hollow
You'll be whitelisted once the server is up and running, and I'll allocate you your skill points at launch.

Just a note: We aren't using Hydrocraft this lore. We're phasing it out with Build 41. That being said, I won't be able to give you everything you've requested. If you'd like some vanilla items instead, feel free to list them! You can also take a look at the mods we're including this lore here for any other items you may want.

If you have any questions, feel free to respond and ask. Thanks!

Oh alright, that's disappointing. You might want to look at this mod:

It incorporates some of the functions of hyrdrocraft that'd be disappointing to lose such as hunting mechanics and bows and arrows. I'm not totally sure if it'd work with Build 41 but it could be worth checking out.

Here's another one you guys could check out if interested:

Definitely be cool to get those features in if possible. Sucks hydrocraft isn't optimized for the new build :(
