≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Jesse is the definition of Good Samaritan. She strives to do things she enjoys while also aiding those around her. She never turns a blind eye to someone in need. She’s the person who will help an old person cross the street, the person who will give a $20 bill to a beggar. She’s kind and compassionate, albeit a bit apprehensive. Although not the most social, she’s trustworthy and dependable.

Character Motivations
Jesse is incredibly dedicated to what she does. She isn’t one to goof around when there are things to be done. Having looked up to her father her whole life, her ideals and morals are modeled after his. Maybe she puts too much pressure on herself. Maybe her standards are too high. Whatever the case, she’s motivated to do her very best in everything that she does.

Physical Appearance
Jesse stands at a height of around 5’6’’. She’s fairly well-built, with broad shoulders and toned arms. She has shoulder-length dark brown hair which is almost always tied back into a ponytail. Her eyes are brown. There are a few minor scars on her knees and shins from falls she’s had along the way. She wears a plain gold wedding band on her left ring finger.

Biography
Jesse Loire was born May 15, 1981, to her parents Gregory and Lillian. Her childhood was, by all accounts, a normal one. She grew up in the suburbs of Louisville in a small town by the name of Indian Hills. Her father was a police officer and her mother worked as a pediatrician at the nearby children’s hospital in Louisville. Being a fairly well-off family, Jesse never had much to worry about. She spent her days doing as she pleased.

She was never the most sociable girl—falling somewhere in the middle ground between introverted and extroverted—and kept her social circle small. The one place she really seemed to shine, however, was at her weekly Girl Scout meetings. Jesse began her journey as a Girl Scout at the age of five and kept with it up until she was a Senior Girl Scout at 17. By that time school had grown to be too much for Jesse and she made the regrettable decision to drop Girl Scouts in favor of studying for her SATs.

Over her years as a Girl Scout, Jesse came to learn all about the environment around her. Her troop took bi-annual camping trips to the local campgrounds where they would spend a week almost entirely distanced from society. From building a campfire to tying proper knots, to navigating through the dense foliage—Jesse’s experiences as a Girl Scout during her formative years truly honed her survival skills.

Jesse spent an immense amount of time with her father throughout her youth. When not tied up with work, Gregory would take Jesse out hiking or fishing. He loved the outdoors just about as much as his daughter. Lillian, however, was not an incredibly prevalent presence in her daughter’s youth. Her work kept her out late most nights, arriving home long after Jesse had gone to bed. While the two got along well, they were never particularly close.

Jesse studied Environmental Science and Criminal Justice at Bellarmine University. Immediately after graduating from college, she joined the police force. Although it was a bit of a struggle advancing through the police academy, her father’s dedication had inspired her over the years, and she felt compelled to follow in his footsteps. It was there, on her first day after officially being brought onto the force, that she met Lisa Romero.
Lisa was Jesse’s partner on the force. Lisa, being slightly more experienced, was tasked with teaching Jesse the ropes. There was hardly ever a time the two weren’t together while on call. They carried out nearly all of their patrols together, they’d go together to respond to distress calls, Lisa would drive Jesse home to her apartment each night—they’d even spend time together on the weekends while not working. The two came to truly cherish each other’s company.

As time went on, fellow officers began to raise questions regarding Jesse and Lisa’s relationship. The two had never questioned it before but compared to the other officers they spent far more time together than anyone else. Their relationship was clearly more than just that of partners on the force, that’s for sure. This prompted a discussion between the pair, and it was then that Jesse finally came to realize she had feelings for Lisa. Lisa reciprocated.

Although met with scrutiny from those around them, Jesse and Lisa truly loved one another and were determined to make things work. After about a month of dating, the two decided to rent a one-bedroom apartment in downtown Louisville and move in together. It just came naturally. They couldn’t have been happier.

2006. Three years since graduating from college. Three years since joining the police force. Three years since beginning her relationship with Lisa. Jesse was happy with her life and had grown used to her routine over the years, and yet… It felt as if something was missing. It took some time and a lot of self-reflection before Jesse finally realized. She wasn’t satisfied with her career. She had enjoyed her time as an officer and appreciated all that her experiences had taught her, but she didn’t want that to be her forever.

After consulting both Lisa and her parents, Jesse resigned from the force. There were no hard feelings. Everyone was fully supportive. One chapter of her life had come to a close and another was about to open. Jesse was finally going to chase her dreams.

Jesse became a park ranger at the campsite she had gone to so many times all those years ago. It was the perfect job for her. Spending her days immersed in nature while keeping peace and order. It was a sense of fulfillment she had never felt before in her life. She had finally found where she belonged.

In August of 2007, on their fourth anniversary, Lisa proposed. Jesse was ecstatic. Of course, she said yes. It didn’t matter that their marriage wouldn’t be officially recognized by the state—as long as they had each other, that’s all that mattered to them. They held a small, private wedding in October of that year which was attended by their close friends and family. The leaves were at their peak, only days away from fluttering down from the trees. It was a beautiful ceremony; all they could have ever hoped for.

When the initial news of the Corto Virus hit the airwaves, Jesse didn’t bat an eye. She assumed it would blow over quickly. There’s no way she could have possibly expected how bad things would get. How her whole world, everything she had built up over nearly the past decade, would come crumbling down.
Within the span of four days, things had grown serious. The virus was rapidly spreading across the country, the world. The military began to take charge, people began to grow desperate. It became a scramble for supplies. A scramble to escape the virus. Lisa was busier than ever before. As a police officer, it was her obligation to maintain order in the city despite the dire circumstances. Jesse continued to work despite being advised not to. She found solace in the woods, although it was becoming all too clear that she wouldn’t be able to hide from the reality of things forever.

If only she had known what was to come.
