≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

No

Age

Personality
Josh is a man on a mission - whatever needs to be done to reach his goal, he will do. Otherwise, he is typically a reserved individual - agreeable in most circumstances, though can be prone to sudden bursts of rage when confronted about certain topics. He has recently rediscovered his faith, and will do what he can within reason to stay on the right path.

Character Motivations
Josh is driven by his desire to become a better man by finding his independence in a world without his wife, and most importantly, reuniting with his two sons. He seeks to stay in control whenever possible - as he has seen the consequences of losing control first hand - and it is not a path he wants to re-tread.

Physical Appearance
Josh stands at a height of six foot three with a physically athletic build. His brown hair is kept short, though scruffy - a similarly unkempt mess of stubble decorating his face. He has tired looking brown eyes, his skin just a shade darker than pale.

Biography
========== BEFORE IT ALL WENT TO SHIT ==========

Josh Crawford was born on the 12th of February, 1979 in Danville, KY to his parents Robert and Olivia Crawford - two working class whites who grew up locally. He had two older sisters and a younger brother - Charlotte, Selena and Billy respectively. Josh enjoyed a more traditional lifestyle growing up, occasionally missing school to help his father out around the home. When he was in school, however - he was a social, outgoing child who performed well in most subjects; most of all in sports, however.

In high school, Josh played football for the school's team as a running back - following the team to match after match, earning himself a reputation as a bright young man with a potential future in the sport. It was at the afterparty of one of these games he would meet his future wife, Beth.

Josh went on to turn down a full-ride scholarship at the University of Kentucky in favor of staying at home with his family. He went to work with his father in construction, securing a local blue collar job in lieu of education.

Young adulthood passed by in a breeze, Josh having been in a serious relationship with Beth since they were both nineteen years old. On her twenty-fourth birthday, he asked her to marry him - and she accepted. It was a quiet wedding, friends and family - both distant and close, attending in droves.

On their wedding night, their first son Robert (after his father) was unwittingly conceived. It came as a surprise to both of them - but they stuck in it, together. Josh was terrified at the prospect of parenthood, but he knew as long as Beth was with him - he could face up to any challenge.

Two years later, their second son William (after his little brother) came. Josh didn't find too much difficulty in being a father - but that all changed when Beth was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009. She was given a little over a year to live - but she survived for two, defying the expectations of doctors and everyone around her.

Josh collapsed.

========== IT ALL GOES TO SHIT IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE ==========

For the first time in his life, Josh spiralled. The death of his wife lead him down a dark, unavoidable path where his only comforts were cheap whiskey and prostitutes. Nothing brought him joy - least of all his children. He would frequently lash out against them, engaging in shouting matches with his two infant sons - some of which would turn physical. He didn't know /why/ he did these things - he just knew he /did/ them.

It was a year before Josh was out on a bender one night - shacked up in a dank motel room with the whore of the evening, when his neighbour and one-time best friend Dylan Brandt called Child Protective Services. They arrived at Josh's house to find two neglected children, and they were more than happy to take them away. When Josh returned home after his latest one-night stand, he flew into a rage. He turned the house upside down, using the heavy wooden furniture to smash through the feeble glass of the windows - a ruckus that brought the whole street to attention.

Dylan and his wife were standing at the end of the drive when Josh stepped out - his hands shredded by shattered glass - blood flowing freely from his cut up knuckles. He marched down the drive towards his one-time best friend and his wife, in full view of the entire neighbourhood as well as Dylan's children.

What happened next had been a thought in every onlooker's mind turned reality as Josh tackled Dylan to the ground - relentlessly pummelling the family man with both bloodied fists - Josh's blood mixed with Dylan's as the onslaught continued. Dylan's wife tried fruitlessly to get Josh off of him - screaming at the top of her lungs alongside her children as they watched their father get the living shit beat out of him by a man pushed over the edge.

It took four of the biggest men on the street to subdue Josh - saving Dylan's life just in the nick of time. When the police showed up, Josh was hurled away in cuffs - and the case was clear cut. He did six months in FCI Manchester, having plenty of time to ponder the nature of his conviction and the events leading up to it - reconsidering his outlook on life. Josh re-discovered his faith in prison, finding Jesus as it were - and he would find solace in attending services and reading the bible, now intent on turning his life around and getting his children back.

By the time the outbreak rolled around, he had gained his freedom and set upon the path to redemption. His life calender may be a little upset by the world's sudden change in dynamic, but his goal remains clear - get his children back, no matter the cost; survival is only a means to an end, and people are a useful resource.

If possible, i'd like to start off alone but in a position where I could easily find a larger group - as my character will not be from the local area or have been around for the evacuation efforts.
