≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Sam is a rather shy girl; though, once opening up to someone, she can be a lot to handle. She's extremely passionate about her interests, finding herself able to go on and on about them forever without fail. Infodumping is a common occurrence with Sam. She's oblivious when it comes to a lot of things, and incredibly dense, but she tries her best. She's just here to mine and chill.

Physical Appearance
Sam has short, dirty blonde hair. It's typically unkempt—it's clear her appearance isn't her first priority. Her eyes are dark brown, with dark shadows standing out below them. A light speckling of freckles covers her face. She stands at a height of about 5'8’’. She tends to wear casual clothes. This typically consists of t-shirts, Hawaiian button-ups, cargo shorts, jeans, etc. There are scars scattered all over her legs from scabs which she has picked over the years.

Biography
Some children are born with their futures planned out for them. Hopes and dreams pushed onto them by their parents from the moment they gain the ability to formulate independent thought. Samantha Thompson was one such child. Born on July 16, 1993, to her parents Jonathan and Lauren, she was burdened with the inevitable future of taking over her family’s business. As Sam grew older, she came to realize that the life of a businesswoman was not one she wanted to live. Her parents thought otherwise.
Education was taken very seriously in the Thompson household. Low marks meant no television after dinner. No stories before bedtime. Sam dedicated herself to her schoolwork, hoping to avoid the wrath of her parents. Although the stress of it all came to be too much at times, Sam found solace in the madness. In her free time, she would draw. Art was her passion. Any spare moment she had, she would doodle away on the margins of her paper, allowing herself to forget all of her worries.
In the beginning, her parents were not at all supportive of Sam’s interests. They found the arts to be worthless. Anything that did not have a set profit value and could not bring someone financial success was meaningless to them. However, Sam refused to relent. She would steal art supplies from school, securing them in her backpack when no one was looking. Stubby colored pencils, chewed up erasers, and markers with their ink levels waning were all Sam had. But the quality of her materials meant nothing. All that mattered to her was the freedom to create. The freedom to let all of her problems wash away by way of her art.
Sam found herself so involved in her art and studies that there was no time to forge lasting friendships. By the time she had realized this fact, everyone around her had already formed friend groups, following each other along in little cliques all throughout the school. Sam knew that she could be happy with the companionship of her own imagination, though she still yearned for a friend. For someone to be there by her side. Someone who would listen to her go on and on about her passion for drawing.
Her parents had always been aware of Sam’s view on their expectations. Although her grades were satisfactory, she showed no interest whatsoever in pursuing a business career path. Each time she would show them her art, her fingers stained with marker and her face filled with hope and anxiety, they would reflect. Reflect on how they were raising their daughter. If what they were doing was truly the right thing for her.
Finally, on her 10th birthday, Sam’s parents relented. She woke up that day to find presents piled onto her chair at the kitchen table. She was absolutely ecstatic. Upon ripping open the wrapping paper, she discovered a plethora of art supplies. Markers, paints, colored pencils, watercolors, sketchbooks. Even an easel and a blank canvas! She was practically bursting with joy!
“Mom… Dad…” she had said, embracing them with all her might. “Thank you so much! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!”
Her parents simply stood there, smiling. They knew they had made the right choice.
From then on, Sam put her all into her art. Her room had become her studio. Paint splatters littered the walls, but she didn’t mind. The ability to let out all of her creativity had brought her such an immense amount of happiness that she no longer cared whether she had friends or not. Of course, the other kids in her class made attempts to take advantage of her artistic talent, begging her to create pieces for their projects, fighting over who got to have Sam in their group for their assignments. And not once did Sam ever care. As long as she was able to create art, she was happy.
Middle school came and went. Sam had taken to entering her art in competitions and had actually won first place in one, eliciting pride from her parents. Over the years, they had grown more and more accepting of Sam’s passion. They had overcome their strict ideals and began to put their daughter’s happiness first. She was her own person, after all.
Near the end of her 8th-grade year, Sam began to think about her future. What she wanted to do, what she wanted to accomplish. Remaining in the sleepy suburbs of Shively, Kentucky seemed pointless to her. She wanted to expand her horizon, rid her life of the same kids she had been seeing for years. The local public high school didn’t interest her in the least. And so, Sam searched. She took to the internet, researching other options for the next four years of her life.
And then, she found it. Nashville School of the Arts. An exclusive high school centered around the arts. She would need to attend an interview and be accepted to attend. The only hole in her plan? Nashville was nearly three hours away, and in an entirely different state! But, nevertheless, she was determined.
Sam approached her parents, presenting to them all of the info she had gathered on the school. Although initially apprehensive, they soon became fond of the idea. If Sam was going to pursue a career in the arts, a high school focused on exactly that would be perfect for her. And, luckily for them, her Aunt Delilah lived just twenty minutes from the school!
After a few calls and hours deliberating, Sam’s Aunt agreed to board her on the chance that she was accepted to the school. And so, Sam put her all into creating the perfect piece for her interview. Her goal? Impress the interviewers with her skill. She spent days and nights holed up in her room, her brush to the canvas. Hundreds of thousands of strokes later, she was done.
When the day of the interview came, Sam’s father securely packed her canvas into the car, and the family began on the three-hour car ride to Nashville.
Although she was anxious and stuttered quite a bit, Sam completed her interview. She passed the remaining days anxiously, the only thing on her mind being the outcome. Finally, she received a letter in the mail. Addressed to her from Nashville School of the Arts. She clenched her eyes shut, slowly slipping the sheet of paper out of the envelope. And then she saw it. Accepted.
Her first year at the school was everything Sam could have dreamed of. Classes all dedicated to honing her skills in drawing and painting. Landscapes, cityscapes, realism, still life. Everything was fun and exciting for her! Even if she was a bit surprised the first time a nude model walked into her drawing classroom.
For the first time in her life, Sam had even made friends. She had joined a club dedicated to life drawings, and there she met two girls. Stella Takeuchi and Danielle Stenton. Just like her, Dani had a passion for drawing and painting while Stella adored writing and poetry. They got along perfectly. They’d roam the streets together after school, browsing shops and grabbing an ice cream or a slice of pizza. On weekends, they’d pile into the small guest room of Sam’s Aunt’s house and watch sitcoms, laughing the nights away. They were inseparable.
High school flew by in the blink of an eye. During their junior year, Dani and Stella had gotten together. Dani was worried Sam would be upset, but it was, in fact, quite the contrary—Sam was ecstatic for her friends. The trio was closer than ever. They all finished high school graduating with high honors, something that Sam was incredibly proud of seeing as she was easily distracted by her interests.
...and that brings her to today. Sam is currently a sophomore in college, studying visual development at a local university. Dani and Stella ended up attending a different school; however, the three girls meet up often on weekends to hang out. Sam couldn’t be happier. She was thriving with her newfound independence. If only she knew what was about to unfold.
