≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
An asshole. He was in prison before all this for near beating someone to death, and the apocalypse isn't exactly great rehabilitation into society.
He isn't particularly BRAVE. Maybe "not foolhardy and aware of his human fragility" is a better way to put it. Because he can, will, and has killed plenty of undead and given enough people fights (as both the aggressor and defender), but he knows RUNNING from a pack of zombies is the right option, as is handing your things to the man with the gun.
That said, he has always found using a zombie as a beat-down dummy a unique kind of fun, if you can stand the stench. And, a good fight can be interesting, if you have the advantages and aren't afraid to play dirty.
If there's a good opportunity that presents itself, he'll try to snag it. This can be stealing someones valuables that've just been left out, being the first in line for work, or moving to nice looking scavenge spot to sell shit to those not good enough to get it themselves.

Through most his life, he's never really found something that he truly wants. Yes, booze, drugs, sex, and other material and carnal desires are wonderful, but he's never identified a true purpose. Given, perhaps he hasn't tried hard, but his life is pretty basic. Before all this with a freeloading life of crime and hustling, and through all this with a life of doing just about everything to keep a layer of fat under his skin and said skin still on his bones. He recognizes this, and often wonders what that void in him can be filled with; the void of purpose.

On "crime" and "immoral acts". He generally just doesn't care. He grew up not caring, went through adulthood not caring, and DEFINITELY hasn't cared for the past 12 years as it's really easy to ignore such things during the collapse of modern society. He'll happily steal, rob, and scam, and has little care for who it impacts and how. Murder and the like though, that's a bit more serious. Not only does it bring dangerous repercussions, the few times he's killed someone he's felt this deep, nasty feeling. He'll do it; but would rather not.
Buuuut...if he was paid enough, or the haul was too good and not able to be done otherwise? Maybe he could suppress that guiltiness.

He enjoys insulting people, and letting them know how shit they are. Makes him feel better about himself. But just because he enjoys it doesn't mean it's a habit. As he learned early in life, only bully those who are clearly weaker than you and don't have backup. Sometimes it's best to keep your tongue held and play nice.

Over the years, he's come to trust tools and his own hands for fighting over guns. Relying on a gun is just bad practice. First, you need to maintain it so it doesn't kill you when you try to fire it. Then you need ammo. And they're loud. Nothing says "COME AND GET ME, I HAVE A VALUABLE TOOL" like a gunshot. It also attracts the undead, which are just as bad as those who think your gun would be a great thing to steal. Handguns are fine for pulling out of a hidden pocket to get someone to fuck off, but anything bigger and you have to wear that or carry it. And that makes you noticed. People see that, and either put their guards up around you or think it'd be a good idea to try to take it from you. So, to Emett, guns are rarely worth it. There are two situations in which he'd rather a gun over a sturdy pipe or even a brick.
1). Intimidation. Aim it at the offending party to make them reconsider something.
2). Groups. If you're with a group, you don't need to worry about people putting their guard up if you show a gun; it's already up since there's several of you. And groups are much harder to steal from, because your chances of being spotted or otherwise found are multiplied for each person nearby.

Finally, a deep-rooted sixth sense of paranoia and distrust has more or less ruled him most his life. It's kept him going through a rough childhood, an adulthood that was filled mostly with running, hiding, and lying, and whatever you call now; where having a plan and being prepared for anything at any moment can save you. So he's extremely unlikely to truly trust someone. He likes "friends" and like-minded comrades he can laugh and work with (loneliness hurts even a bastard like him, and backup is universally useful), but it's doubtful they'll be more than people he works with and occasionally laughs with.

Character Motivations
Eat. Eat nice things sometimes. Enjoy alcohol. Make it to the next day. Sometimes destroy something. Entertain self.

Physical Appearance
Caucasian, a flat six foot, and once definitely overweight. After twelve years of intense physical survival and less than constant food, much of this weight has dropped; as likely is the case for most everyone else still alive.
He's balding and has been since he went into prison, though his beard grows well enough. He doesn't shave it, though occasionally trims it. He has a handful of tattoos on his body and arms, from the years he spent in an outlaw motorcycle club and in prison.

Biography
Childhood: mother and father were both avid users (addicts) of opiods, among other things. They were not good parents, and Emett generally cared for himself when they were high as hell. School was something fluid to him, as early on sometimes he could go, sometimes he couldn't, mostly due to something his parents did or didn't do. Not being forced to go and not finding much enjoyment, he only went enough to where he wouldn't get expelled. He always caused trouble, was definitely a bully in a group of bullies, and dropped out in junior year at age 17.

Adolescence/young adulthood: Emett had made friends with plenty of people who didn't give a shit about the law, education, or real jobs. He ran with them for awhile, and left home at 19 to go to them "full-time". They stole, burglarized, and often grew and sold pot. Their grimy street gang didn't do much, other than give them a way to live their lives without actually working, though he picked up a variety of skills, as everyone needed to maintain whatever crummy hole they were living in, and help out with the production and sale of marijuana. At 23, he earned himself a 5 year trip to prison for selling their product, foolishly caught in a sting operation.

1st trip to prison: 5 years for selling pot, and he quickly adjusted to the new life. He didn't join a gang, but he did linger around the Aryan Brotherhood and the their similar offshoots. Race decided where you went, he was white, and wanted to limit the amount of times he'd be stabbed. He helped them out with various small tasks here and there; enough to earn some degree of respect. He served his whole five years, and never tried nor would be accepted for parole. Emett's prison record was not stellar.

Adulthood: Getting out at 28, Emett went right to a motorcycle club with connections to the Aryan Brotherhood. He didn't really buy into the whole race war thing, but some of the guys he'd met in prison suggested that if he wanted to try to join up there, they could phone in a good word or two on his behalf. So he took that up, and joined up with the MC, called the Highway Reds, and spent the next 6 years with them. He got some tattoos, made meth, and a plethora of other crimes. One night, he was doing a dead drop for the club. Just hide some drugs in this place, and leave. A jogger came by, asked what he was doing, Emett told him to fuck off, and he pulled out his cell to call the cops. Emett proceeded to leap at the man, and beat him nearly to death. The jogger had a brutally mangled face, but lived. Emett was arrested not long after, and while no-one could pin him for doing anything with drugs (the other party picked up the dead drop before cops could find it), he still got a nasty 16 year prison sentence, now at age 34.

2nd trip to prison: Despite getting 16 years for aggravated assault, he got out much sooner. Only 6 years into the sentence, the apocalypse happened. In those 6 years beforehand, not a lot happened. He got some more tattoos. Actually hooked up with the Aryan Brotherhood. Beat some people. Did more crime while in prison.

The apocalypse: When shit hit the fan, most guards weren't in the prison, having died at home or had just quit a few weeks earlier. So the measly number of guards still in the prison proved to be of little resistance once the prisoners made a massive riot and took over. Most guards fled, a few were killed, and the prison belonged to the prisoners. But it was promptly overrun by the undead, only a couple days into its new rule.
Emett didn't try to stick around once the zombies showed up. He just ran, leaving his gang behind. His original plan was to meet back up with his MC, but seeing how society had been crumbling with no sign of stopping, he quickly gave up on that to focus on his personal survival. At the beginning stages of all of this, he got by primarily through going on a looting spree, and hiding somewhere until supplies got low, and then looting again. He hurt a few people, killed two (one was someone who attacked him in sleep, another was someone who he started a fight with but it got out of hand and he won), and rarely slept. Emett didn't stay in one place for too long, always moving north with no real goals. Nomadic in nature, he's spent the last 12 years gradually moving north from Georgia, scavenging, stealing, and helping as he saw fit to keep himself alive. A few groups of people he joined up with, but left for one reason or another. One he left just cause he wanted to keep moving and felt like someone in the group was gonna stab in him the back. Another was attacked by a horde, and he left them for dead to save his own skin. A third expelled him after he got drunk and started a fight. The fourth he had been stealing from over a few months, making secret caches in the general area with the hidden stuff; he disappeared one night once they started to get suspicious. The fifth, he murdered someone in it, and they tried to kill him back, but he escaped mostly unharmed.
Through this, he killed four more people. One was in a firefight between one of his groups and another. One was a mercy-killing of someone who was royally maimed by a horde. One was someone who he HATED for a plethora of reasons (and vice versa) and suspected was going to kill him, so he made a preemptive strike by murdering them in their sleep and trying to make it look like he was out taking a piss and zombies got him (this was group five). Finally, the fourth was a highway robbery gone wrong. He had someone at gunpoint, but they tried to draw a gun on him, so he shot them.
Emett often wakes up, having had nightmares about his murders, primarily that he himself is killed for revenge by one of the friends of those he's ended. Though he's definitely guilty about all of this, he rationalizes it by convincing himself that they were all necessary, and it's impossible someone would track him all the way to New York just for revenge.

Today: Emett has recently entered New York, a few months ago. His plans are to stay awhile, maybe a few months, maybe a year or two (basically as long as he can live here comfortably), and then move on. He thinks all these 'factions' are fine, though it's unlikely he'd actually join one. He offers himself as a hired worker here and there, and keeps his eyes out for the best ways to get an advantage on these people.

A quick reply to this, I don't actually want to be apart of a group, but for some reason I couldn't submit it without saying "Yes". So I just said yes, but don't want to be in a group.

Heya, Bill! I've reviewed your application and it's accepted!

Here's your login info:
Username: Emett Kouris
Password: cyclepath
You'll be whitelisted once the server is up and running.

We have a hard limit of two requested items this lore. Out of everything on your list, which two do you want the most?

If you have any questions, feel free to respond and ask. Thanks!

Also. That's so weird? I just tested the application and I was able to submit it just fine. When you select no for the group question, it should ask if you want to be put into a random group. Then you can select no again and submit it. What error did you get?

Error I got was something like "You must select whether or not you wish to join a randomized group before submitting" or something, even though I had it on "no".
As for items, knife and bag.

I'm guessing it was some issue on your side, then. Xenforo isn't always the most reliable. I'll mark down the items though, thanks!

hello i saw the @everyone and would like some points pretty please
since emett survived by stealing, fighting, looting, and common labor, i dont think hed have any Crafting levels except 1 in First Aid. Since that's really more of a survival skill.
For Firearms, as mentioned, he finds them useful in only some niche situations, so hasn't invested in them. I'd like 1 or 2 in Aiming though, since 0 in PZ aiming is shockingly bad.
Agility, if I could get 2 across the board, I feel that'd fit well. Honestly, anyone alive this long and not having been sheltered for all of it probably knows how to move well. He's also getting kinda old, so maybe not.
Blade and Blunt. I'd like 3 in each category for each skill. Like above, those who survives the initial years no doubt fought a lot, Emett especially. He also fought plenty before all of this.
