≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Arlo is a friendly and capable young man. Well-spoken, thoughtful, and clever, he is a passionate defender of his Monroe community. While personable, his life of loss and grief has made him reserved and closed off. Throughout the course of his life, everybody he's ever known or grown close to has invariably died and left him alone. Determined to live up to his father's reputation, he is a moral and loyal person who cares about doing the right thing. However, he finds himself unable to connect to other people or open his heart to the extent his father always did, unable to work past the constant and profound losses he has continually experienced over the entirety of his life.

Character Motivations
Arlo wants to live up to his father's hopes for him and to be as close as possible to the man he was. He largely correlates his father with the community he helped create, and thus is an ardent supporter of Monroe and is passionate about it keeping true to its values while maintaining its security and independence. However, despite his love of the community he often feels detached from the people who reside in it and struggles to allow himself to form bonds with those around him.

Physical Appearance
Arlo is a fairly average looking young man. He stands at 5'11" and like his father is quite strong. A life of combat and construction has given him well-defined muscles and an athletic build. Born of a white father and a black mother, he is light-skinned with dark eyes. He keeps his hair closely trimmed to his head and tries to keep himself fairly well groomed.

Biography
Roscoe Gray was born into poverty in Philadelphia. His father left at the news of his mom’s pregnancy and his mother worked very long hours to sustain the family, making her a loving but largely absent figure in his life. Despite his hardships, Roscoe always selflessly looked out for the well-being of others. He struggled academically in school, despite being well-spoken and intelligent. However, his sociable and athletic nature ensured he was well-liked among his peers. Upon graduating high school, he landed a job in construction. While it was back-breaking work, Roscoe enjoyed working with his hands and learning about the trade. He became close with an older man who worked on his first job with him, and under his tutelage quickly acquired competencies within the line of work. While growing up with limited opportunity squashed childhood dreams, Roscoe’s newfound skill gave him the confidence to foster ambitions. Quickly, he developed a desire to one day open his own construction company renovating dilapidated homes in impoverished communities. After two years on the job, Roscoe entered a serious relationship with a young woman named Amber. He was a loving and considerate partner, however he was fearful of commitment and their courtship lasted six years before Roscoe finally proposed. Throughout this time, he diligently expanded his skillset and put aside money, sharing his ambition with his partner. Months after their wedding, Amber became pregnant with a son.

In April of 2006, Arlo Gray was born. His parents were able to provide a much better quality of life for his son than they had experienced themselves, and Arlo was a happy and energetic kid. When Roscoe was almost ready to take the leap and start his own company, the great recession occurred, devastating his savings. Undeterred, he simply started building his savings back up. By the time Arlo was seven, Roscoe was filling out the paperwork for a small business loan, again ready to take that bold step. However, Amber unfortunately got diagnosed with cancer. Without a second thought, Roscoe poured all of the family’s hard-earned savings into her treatment, determined to save his beloved wife. Sadly, the cancer was aggressive and she was dead within 8 months.

Arlo and Roscoe were both devastated, however Roscoe was determined to put on a strong front for his son and to help him through his profound loss. He struggled with working long hours on construction sites while trying to be a single father for his son. His dreams of opening his own company were shattered and his only ambition became raising his son into a healthy and happy young man. A couple years later, when Arlo was only 10, that goal would become the sole purpose of his life as the world around him plunged into chaos. Having lost his mom, young Arlo was no stranger to grief. However, watching the entirety of the world collapse around him was extremely traumatic. His father immediately began trying to figure out how to navigate the new apocalyptic world in an effort to keep his son alive. They managed to find a group of likeminded survivors who they set out with on a journey to find safety. Many of the family’s friends were killed on the road. Kids in particular seemed to be dying fast, and by the time they found sanctuary at a high school Arlo was the only kid left in the group. Roscoe fortified the building using his knowledge of construction and they began to learn how to navigate this new world. Their group recruited new people and faced many threats. They had to combat bandits and internal strife as well as zombies and starvation. Roscoe evolved into the man he had to be to keep his son safe, killing people and zombies alike when he deemed it necessary. However, he still didn’t lose his caring nature and made a point to help people wherever possible, both to set an example for his son and because that was simply in his nature.

Close to 8 months after finding the school, it fell to a horde of zombies. Most of the residents died, having Arlo, Roscoe, and a handful of other residents managed to escape. Over the next 8 years they’d move from place to place. Each would eventually fall due to internal politics, starvation, disease, zombies, or enemy groups. All the while, Roscoe remained true to himself and Arlo was raised into a capable young man, able to effectively navigate this reality he was raised in. His dad and various other group members taught him how to fight, how to shoot, how to hunt, how to build, and how to survive. In between each place of refuge, various amounts of time was spent on the road. At one point, when Arlo was 13, he and his dad spent close to a year on the road. Roscoe became hardened during that time, becoming increasingly morally ambiguous in his efforts to keep his son alive. However, upon finding their next haven he managed to pull himself from this dark place, becoming true to himself as it became safe to do so.

8 years after the start of the apocalypse, Arlo and his dad found themselves at the Capital of the Coalition of Pittsford and Fairpoint. Roscoe was immediately lauded for his carpentry skills, and he became a contributing member of their society. Arlo, now a young man at 18, worked alongside his dad. The place was large and secure, but Roscoe was unconvinced of its permanence and ensured that he and his son kept their skills in combat fresh, despite their relative safety within its walls. As time went on, Roscoe became more and more unsettled with the governance of their new home, finding it full of corruption and immortality. Worried the strife would lead to internal conflict and he and Arlo would be caught in the crossfire, he made the decision to leave. After about a month on the road, they came across a small group of people in Monroe County, living at a large campsite. Roscoe became quick friends with many of the group and decided alongside them to build up a community of their own, which they could run in a way that placed an emphasis on both security and morality. For the past 9 years, he was unable to find a place where his son could live the life he wanted him to live, so he made the decision to build it himself. Roscoe and Arlo became well respected members of the community and their dedication in physically constructing the location was greatly appreciated. Roscoe himself took on a leadership role within the group, helping their leader draft the laws and often being a mediator in times of conflict.

A little over a year after its construction, Roscoe died defending the town against a horde of zombies. He was bit on the jugular and bled out before Arlo could say his goodbyes. Arlo and Julian put together a funeral service for the beloved man and Arlo delivered a moving eulogy. Now, Arlo serves as Monroe’s sole carpenter, using the skills his father taught him to build up his community. He also is an ardent participant in the defense of Monroe, helping combat threats to the community and occasionally participating in scavenging missions. However, he is always cautious not to put himself in any unduly risky situations. Still distraught over the death of his father, he is more reserved than he used to be. He tries to live up to his father’s hopes and reputation, wanting to actively participate in the community. However, despite this desire he largely keeps to himself, overwhelmed by his profound loss. All the same, he is Monroe’s biggest supporter and strongly opposed to any talk to incorporate it into The Coalition.

Would you like your character to start with any items?
I recognize that you have wrote that we can only request 2 items but considering we are 12 years into the apocalypse (thus limiting unscavenged items) and we are in a well-established community where I serve an important role, I would like to request the ability to have all the mechanical items to fill that role, things I believe would be realistic to have.

These things would include a toolkit including a large pack (to RPly serve as a toolbelt), a hammer, as many nails as you feel comfortable giving me, a bucket, a sledgehammer, a screwdriver, an axe, and any other construction items you guys can think of that you'd be comfortable giving me.

Ideally I'd also like some kitchen / food supplies for my house but I could always just go OOCly scavenge for those.

As for a personal item, I'd ask for a picture renamed Photo of Roscoe and a revolver that is his personal sidearm. I'm okay if you guys give me no ammo for it but a couple bullets would be cool if that's no problem.

Thanks and feel free to reach out with any concerns!

Is your character a member of a group?
Yes

Is your character a member of one of the world factions?
Monroe

Please detail your position within the faction, as well as your reason for being in The Barrens.
This is all laid out within the bio. Additionally, if Monroe has some form of electricity (solar, wind, etc) Roscoe would've likely had a hand in setting it up and would've consequently taught Arlo how to maintain it.

Heya, Cascade! I've reviewed your application and it's accepted!

Here's your login info:
Username: Arlo Gray
Password: woody
You'll be whitelisted once the server is up and running.

I personally don't count the occupational items toward your 2 item limit, so that's a-okay with me. Everyone would have food, as well. So your two items are the photo and the revolver!

If you have any questions, feel free to reply and ask. Thanks!

Figured I'd do the whole skill claims thing given we're having it be a more formal system now

Construction: 10 (so I'll be able to do everything I'd RPly be able to do as Chief of Construction. If there's anything I'd mechanically be able to do but RPly wouldn't, I won't do it.)

Blade Accuracy: 3

Blade Maintenance: 3

Aim: 4

Reload: 2

Sprinting: 4

Cooking: 4

Sneaking: 3

Lightfooted: 3

Metalworking: 4
