≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
The Monk is just that, a monk. For decades he has followed the teachings of Buddha closely in an attempt to reach enlightenment. He is kind to all, forgiving, and generous. Often quiet and soft spoken. He knows his time will come, and that he must continue to help where he can, when he can anywhere. He is not perfect, like all people at times falling victim to attachment, even if he fights to not show it.

Character Motivations
To spread kindness, and good karma across the ruins of the world.

Physical Appearance
The Monk stands at 5’3” tall, with a slight hunch, he is a frail thin man. His head is cleanly shaved bald and he is wrapped in robes that are a dirty combination of brown and green over a long faded orange. A handmade rice paddy hat sits on his head. The face and eyes of an aged man, wrinkles and crow’s feet included. It’s obvious he’s over the peak of his life.

Biography
Born to a Thai born immigrant mother on January 1st 1978, his mother made the difficult decision of putting him up for adoption in the city of San Francisco, California, he never knew his blood relatives, but that didn’t matter to him. When he was a toddler he was adopted by a family who lived in rural Idaho, the Gingrich family. They were devout Christians and he was brought up in that life. Malakai Gingrich was the name he was given by his new family. The oldest of a family of 6 other adopted siblings Malakai was always a kind soul, always striving to help and protect his siblings, though he was small he always tried his best to defend his siblings.
Through school Malakai never really took to studies, simply he wasn’t interested. He passed with straight C’s, more interested in reading on faith. Of course starting with the Bible, then into other books such as the Buddhist teachings. He also took very heavily to the farm work his father had him do, as well as loving the outdoors. Once into adulthood Malakai decided that he wanted to explore his roots, so he told his family he was going to Thailand to study as a monk, with sadness they wished him well and off he went.
For over a decade he studied the way of Buddha, learning to live with no possessions, and detach from his family back in the United States, but every year he would fly home for Christmas to see his family, sharing the stories of the Monastery, and learning of his family. One year he came home to Idaho, to see the home he’d been raised in was destroyed, no livestock, no crops to harvest. He went to the post office in town to use the phone and called one of his brothers. They then told him that his parents had died when the house collapsed early in the year. They said they tried to get in contact with him, but were unable to. The investigators found that the home had damage to the foundation and after a very wet spring, it gave out.
Devastated Malakai called each sibling and said his final goodbyes, bidding them all farewell. He continued to live as a monk for quite some time. Until he moved back to the States to teach buddhism in the place of his birth. Traveling by foot and spreading the word of buddhism and it’s teachings where he could. After years of doing this finally came what many called the end of days. To Malakai it was merely another change in pace. Things were quieter now, meditation was easier, and people were often more desperate. Malakai survived in the wilderness traveling still and helping those he could. In these times however, he broke one of the Five Precepts. To refrain from taking the life of any living creature.
Over the years he lost his way, he fought to survive. Continuing to live on the outskirts of society, though only killing the infected when threatened or completely necessary, it still hurt his spirit, and he felt he’d lost all the progress to enlightenment he’d strived for his entire life. One day in about 2025 after years wandering, fearful, and lost Malakai thought of the times he’d prayed as a boy taking a knee and praying to the sky for guidance. “Show me a sign. I pray to find my way.” A simple request, that took every fiber of his being to manage. It felt foolish, and pointless. Then the next day when rummaging through a store a man walked up behind him and grabbed his attention. “What are you doing?” Spinning around, blade already drawn, he looked at the man with the fear of a trapped animal. “What..? I’m trying to find something to eat.” The man smiled. “I mean why are you this way. Why are you living like this? Solely impulse and fear.” He stared at the man for a few moments very confused. The mysterious stranger spoke again, “I’ve walked many miles, and I know your eyes, and your face. You are far too old to merely be ignorant. You are lost, and you must refind your path.” By this time Malakai had sheathed his knife, looking at the man with such curiosity. “How?” The man smiled once more. “Each way can only be found by a person by their own search. I can only tell you that nature held the key for myself.” With that he turned and left saying no more.
Malakai knew now. He ventured deep into the mountains and meditated for a week, only drinking and eating the bare minimum. His mind recalling and judging his choices over these hard years. His Karma forever scarred. He knew with the time left in this life he would not only spread the teachings of the Buddha, but live them to the very best of his ability. With every person he came across after he gave them something, or everything. He made new bright orange robes from a collection of curtain fabrics, and traveled for the next 3 years, now a monk once again. If ever he met someone he’d once seen they called him such, “The Monk”.
