Personality
Charles always kept to himself during primary school and never got the chance to break out of his social shell. When the outbreak happened and things started shutting down, so did Charles. He grew cold and would hardly speak to anyone except his parents and little sister. Around 13 when the UK shut down sea and air Charles parents kept him and his sister camped down in their basement for days while their mom and dad would switch shifts going up to the surface level. After not getting any updates but clearly seeing a change in his parents stature and emotions, Charles knew something bad was happening outside. He began to only trust his sister knowing that his parents were lying to them about what was going on. Any time he would mention the surface his parents would quiet him down, change the subject, or outright ignore him. This changed him, making his cold attitude only worse and further hardening his skin.
Almost a week after the outbreak Charles father didn't come back after one of his runs outside. A few hours of waiting and growing antsy his mother left the basement and went to see what could have happened. Charles being intrigued and a little bit careless gave him the drive to follow his mother up the basement steps to their old kitchen he missed greatly. Upon entering the kitchen Charles was mortified, there were corpses everywhere. Tattered ragged beings and flies that would forever cement a sound in his head filled the room. As he looked across the room he saw his mother screaming at his father not realizing Charles had followed them upstairs. The few bits Charles remembers from their argument were the few words and sentences; 'Scavengers...'... 'maybe they needed help?'.... 'Why would you risk all of this?'... 'You were just going to leave?'.
After that day Charles never saw his father again. His mother never answered his questions, his sister never learned of them, and Charles moved on, grew stronger. Travelling was actually pretty easy for the three of them, they would only travel at night under the cover of the moon and never went out during stormy weather. Charles and his sister lost a lot of weight but his mother took the brunt of the fasting. Slowly they headed West to an aunts home in Plymouth to try to get out of the UK, it took them nearly a month to travel the entire distance mostly on foot with the occasional citizen nice enough to trust that no one was bit.
Character Motivations
After arriving at Plymouth and realizing the bigger cities and coastal towns got hit the hardest, Charles mother carried on through the town going through the cover of night and going building to building. A day later they arrived at their Aunts house and quickly realized that she definitely didn't make it through the initial wave of the outbreak. With this information Charles mother pushed on and knew they had to either get on a boat or find someone to take them further inland.
A few hours after leaving their aunts house the group arrived at the port of Plymouth and started scouting around for survivors. With not really any luck the three were about to give up and call it a night when suddenly the entire pier shot alive with lights and a few different voices shouting. Further investigating the docks they found that the last boat in town was readying themselves to depart when a malfunction in the boat set off a loud commotion and drew the undeads attention to the group.
Taking this chance Charles mother grabbed both her childrens hands and sprinted towards the dock waving her bags and a dirty stuffed animal in her arms. Running towards the group they noticed that no one was firing any weapons, instead the group of sailors were charging the undead with melee weapons and a few makeshift rifles that launched out blunt object of sorts. Rotating around the action Charles and his sister were guided behind their mother as she yelled at them to run straight for the boat while she tried to get someones attention.
The next few moments Charles will forever remember. It was like he had heard friends before in school talk about;
"Yeah mate, when you're close to hittin' the dirt you just go all slow mo like and it's like a weird high in a way. Idunno mate, my older brother just told me about it!".
Time slowed down around him as he watched the scene unfold, he watched as a sailor rushed his mother mistaking her for... someone.. Charles doesn't remember and when he thinks back it only pains him and he has to quickly throw it away. But.. he rushed her.. he didn't hesitate for a second, he just threw his arm back and attacked.. Charles could see in the sailors eyes the look of anger quickly wash into a look of sadness, surprise, and maybe even a tiny bit of anguish.. but there was nothing he could do, the swing had been set in motion and no one could stop it. Charles only closed his eyes to not see the aftermath, he grabbed his sisters hand and lifted her into his arms tucking her tight into his chest as he sprinted to the boat.
Upon reaching the boat most of the action had been done, he could hear the confusion and crying of the sailors as someone realized what happened. Charles only pushed on up the ramp shouting out for someone to help him and his sister. He changed that day, Charles snapped.
A few months later Charles had debriefed the captain on his journey through the lands with his mother and sister then had to go through the emotional carnage of writing out the report of what he saw happened to his mother. The captain of the ship gave Charles and his sister free passage to their destination and many of his condolences over what happened. During that time Charles learned that the ship was heading for a small island off the east coast of America to pick up a group of survivors from a small navel camp. After that the ship was heading to the port of New York to then refuel at a small Military base then head back across the sea. The captain allowed the siblings to either stay aboard the ship for as long as they would like or take their chances in America.
With such a huge decision Charles had a lot to think on. During his travels with the sailors he learned a lot about craftsmanship and honing his strength doing manual labor. As soon as they arrived to the port Charles thanked the captain for everything and headed towards the city with his sister in tow. Once arriving at the outpost with a small group alongside him, Charles found that the military had thinned itself out to do recon on a small town further inland. Staying around for a few weeks and learning the lay of the area around the base Charles started learning quickly what the Red Eye virus really had done to everyone... the people it killed.. the people it tortured before only putting them in an eternal prison walking the Earth. It further threw Charles over the edge; the cold, quiet, and naive Charles no longer was there. Only a hardened soon to be 16 year old man that had to grow up fast to survive.
Staying around the base was nice for the sibling but it proved to be dangerous time and time again with small hordes passing by every day or so. Charles had signed himself up [with the intention of NOT joining] accompanying a group of scouts that were heading to do another run inland to hopefully see what he could find out about the areas he hadn't seen.
The trek proved to be quite boring for the group with only a few sittings of zombies here and there and no real signs of any life that hadn't completely lost their mind. After spending eighteen days on their journey one morning a soldier manning the radio picked up on a sign of life finally; a meager town radioing to each-other signaling trade routes and potential safe zones. The group of soldiers immediately packed up and headed back to the base to grab the rest of the group and get the wounded and young to safety.
A week later of hard pressed trekking Charles and his group came back to an awful sight. The main chain linked fence surrounding the compound had been broken through by some kind of metal forked vehicle and ripped open the size of a small car. After further investigation the group found the entire base ransacked and a few survivors. Gathering everyone and trading stories Charles had been informed that his sister had been taken along with a few of the other younger children after the bandits deemed themselves more properly equipped to take care of them. With this knowledge a huge weight on Charles shoulder had been lifted along with a gut wrenching feeling that he had fucked up big time. The soldiers took the time to gather all of their belongings and decided it was best to head to the town they had found and see if they could supply themselves up, drop off the wounded, then head out and look for their people.
Physical Appearance
A young black haired pale teen that has been so worn down from his past that he looks to be a shorter adult.
