≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Character Name
Caw Caw! (John Smih)

What sort of authorization do you want?
Background Contacts, Faction Relationship, Lore Information, Other

Which background contacts would you like to request authorization for?
I cannot deny my character's Crow roots any longer--despite them being incredibly shallow.

More or less, been improv RPing in the woods to get a better handle on this character. And I don't want to improv over any lines and muck shiz up by accidentally RP-talking about Crowish things which I know nothing of--and which, ultimately, would just be bawwwwlshiiit.
I've accidentally done this, already, during a fun event with Tyler. Apologies about that, too, because I completely forgot to...well, you know...Ask for permission like a reasonable and respectful human being.

So, to pivot from that, I'm going to shoot myself in the foot by asking for ten miles more.
(Sincerely, though: Thank you tons for any consideration on these ideas. I really like them, but I totally understand that there likely isn't room for background requests the size of a small village.

-------------------

To the prompt:--background contacts:

Ideally The Crows sect in Pennsylvania, if this exists (fingers crossed.) And, if this exists--or if it fits within the pre-existing lore framework logic--:a capital Crow's spot roundabouts...

Lake Erie!

This said, I'm kind of pushing for this character to be a Crow outcast of sorts. He isn't a Hawk by any means, but--if it is allowed--it'd be cool if he sort of, uhh. 'left the Pennsylvania Crows sect in,' ahh. Well--flames, to put it bluntly.

(More on that request below--I know this is sort of a lot.)

Which faction would you like to be authorized to have an established relationship with?
-Background 'affiliations' with the Pennsylvania Crows. Those still of the Erie sect ('nother request below), who travel, might consider John Smith to be a Hawk, a traitor, and the murderer of the Lake Erie flock's 'Ma,' (not Mother; lesser flock-leader version.)--as well as one of her closest confidants. (this, too, breaches into the last prompt on the form. sozzy-sozzy--attempting to section this stuff off, somehow.

-On the other hand: Possible affiliations with those of the Erie Lake flock who'd give utmost respects to John Smith: Those 'in the know' about the chaotic events which led to the near destruction of the entire Erie Lake flock (suppositional; request below.) More or less: This particular flock's Crow leader, 'Maude Ma,' was actually betrayed and murdered by the above-mentioned confidant--not John Smith. John Smith was framed by said confidant and two of said confidant's lackies.

What lore information would you like to be authorized to know?
Anything of Pennsylvania Crows, really. Or anything which y'all think would be relevant / interesting.

Is there something not listed that you'd like to be authorized for?
In this particular hypothetical tale schemed, John Smith eventually managed to get to the bottom of things--confronting them. Naturally, all hell broke loose--and John Smith ended up killing the traitor Crow (who, by now, had gained control over the Flock), mostly in self-defense. It was the only life John Smith has ever taken--and it haunts him to this day (despite the traitor Crow being a real sonofabitch.)

Ultimately, the Erie Flock was ripped asunder by its own inner turmoil--as many, of course, believed in--and followed staunchly--Maude Ma's murderer. John Smith, being more of a temporary, fledgling, (honorary?) Crow didn't have much sway in things. When all the dust settled? I'd fancy (fingers crossed) that only a handful of Crows who knew the truth were still around to pick up the pieces.

In high hopes, it'd be a sort of "ashes to ashes" deal--wherein any rumors on the Crows' roads would simply amount to that: Rumors. But, hey, if Hawk-hunting bounty hunters showed up, or something, I'll totally eat dust and die in the dirt with honor--as I understand all of this is a little extreme, and that extreme ramifications could realistically follow.

Oh--and:

The traitor Crow, Maude Ma's murderer (who John Smith ultimately killed, himself) was pretty wise in who he'd trusted: His two lackies, certainly not unwise themselves, are still out there, somewhere. Maybe they starved to death? Dunno. Maybe they turned over a new feather? Laid low? I'yunno. I'd imagine they'd likely lack the resources needed to lay hate to road rumors in an attempt to get their talons on John--as their attempt to overthrow the Erie Lake Crows was, basically, a complete disaster.

Or, (i'yunno), maybe they're assholes. Shrug. (& thank you, in advance, for reading all this jazz--I don't mean for it to sound over-presumptuous, or anything. I know the Crows lore stuff is likely written in stone, as it is--but I just got excited about these ideas. So if there's any wiggle room to fit any morsel of this stuff in, in any way, shape, or form, it'd be amazing. But, if not, would it be okay to seek admin guidance to see if there's any corner-pocket in macro-lore to possibly tinker on a little local tale, or some sort?

-----------

As for Monroe County's flock leader, Mmmmmister Rook!

I'm not sure how well-connected the dude is, but some form of distant heard-through-the-grapevine thing could be cool.

Although I do humbly request this:

In all likelihood, John Smith would indeed know of Rook's existence--as he's lived in the area for most of his life. I'd imagine the first thing he'd ask any Crow roost, here, there, or over the hill, somewhere, would be about any Crows near Rochester / Monroe. If he was in decent standing with said over-the-hill Crows, mayhaps they'd mention Rook's flock? (I have zero idea how the Crows hierarchy, communications, vetting, and coordinations work. I'm just BSing. But--aye, any lines thrown would be rad.

And—just for side reference, and hopefully to party the whole ‘left a lake in flames’ bit:
I’d imagined the Erie Crows to be incredibly peaceful—very similar to Rook’s flock. John, himself, is supposed to be a pacifist-type—even viewing Red Eyes as human, in the end. (Figure maybe the Erie Crows had such a ruckus because the aspiring triumvirate traitors, basically, had idealized more mobilized and violent approaches to dispersion across the country. Figure ‘Maude Ma’ was an herbal healer, or something.
-----------

I have a couple of other Lore Authorization submissions, too, but I have to get ready for work twenty minutes ago. Monsters, concoctions, Wolfmen, stuff like that: Hopeful utilities of the mind's eye--those a traveling Banisher relies upon.
('Banisher,' too. Got to sub a request app for that one. Can't not lean into Van Hellsing vibes with monsters afoot. Got to make up for what my WWB-Part I old man character was supposed to be. Stoked as fire.

Wishing you all a nice weekend,

Devon

You did fine in our first encounter; captured the strangeness of most of the Crows well. No need to apologize, you're a great writer.

There is a sect of Crows in Pennsylvania! Most flocks outstretch a good bit. I'll give you a rundown of the different sects, as well as their leaders (if you want). The story of 'Maude Ma' works well with an on-going arc within the Crows -- so -- we can adapt it into the arc pretty easily.

At the moment, the Pennsylvania flock is led by a man in his forties -- Tokori -- an aged member of The Crows. He likely would've served as one of ''Maude Ma''s right-hand men prior to him succeeding and filling her role. The Pennsylvania Crows likely subsisted off of fishing and given the closeness to Kentucky and Ohio have handled the on-and-off monster. Living in such an area is rigorous and cursed with added threats such as Green Fog storms, as well as another -- Red Fog, or blood storms. The Green Fog is an often sign of the lands growing sickly, and dying off similarly to what has happened in Valley Station, Kentucky (The Deadlands).

(The Deadlands consist of where Part 1 occurred, spiraling out from Valley Station to West Point, Muldraugh, Louisville, and onward. These parts of Kentucky are moe or less avoided due to the unnatural wildlife, monsters, and newly growing fauna. Braver souls hide out in these locations, or go there seeking old-world treasures.)

Given experiences members of Maude Ma's crows have no doubt had, most of them have probably dealt with--and handled differing monsters (you can choose the methods behind this, given the pacifism angle which I am highly in support of, let your creativity go wild, I can work with any of it considering a lot of the monsters are more similar to animals--as opposed to the Red Eye counterparts). I'll address these in your other ticket. Atop of that, most of them have probably deduced the best way to handle the mysterious fogs.

The Green Fog isn't deadly -- but exposure to it is not healthy either. It usually serves as nothing but a sign of what the land is ahead, the thicker it is, the more time the land has spent terraforming into the ungodliness that is The Deadlands. It's advisable to wear a mask while navigating through these lands as rumors have spread of strange effects to extended exposure to "thicker" patches of the fog; from mutations, to infection, to respiratory issues and hallucinogenic effects.

The Red Fog is what follows a large concentration of ... unique infected -- sprinters that have long taken over by the fauna and preserved to an extent. These creatures are deadly and borderline unheard of due to the rarity of the sightings. Exposure to this fog is highly deadly and causes a whole slew of effects adding to the danger. It trails ahead of the ''horde'' by an hour, giving communities little time to prepare. Most communities or flocks faced with this usually fall as victims.

(You can come up with an exclusive unique name for both of these within the flock if you want.)

Is there something not listed that you'd like to be authorized for?

This is all fine, consider it approved. It fits fine within the lore of The Crows. They've been around for a time now, and have had plenty of dissent within the individual flocks. It happens, and this wouldn't be too unusual considering some of the on-going stuff with the current arc. I may include those two lackies in future events unless you have plans for them.

Most members of The Crows communicate through messages left behind in small supply caches; nests, as they're called. It's perfectly reasonable John knows about Rook and his flock, and no doubt more reason information left behind in several roosts by departing members of his ''flock''. They are also all nomadic -- often moving through their regions with haste. It's rare to see a flock set down for long periods of time but has happened in the past

The hierarchy goes as such:
* The Crow Mother / Angwusnasomataka / Tumas | (She has many differing titles, each of them with similar -- if not identical meaning.)
* Men and Women with Wings | (These are the individual flock leaders -- trusted individuals, her inner-circle. Maude Ma would've no doubt been one.)
* Her advisor within the main flock -- Pelli.
* Feathered Crows
* Fledglings

Recently, John has probably acquired information regarding Rook's sudden disappearance, the death of his right-hand, Whisper, and numerous members of his flock departing for safety. An unusual message was left behind in one of these nests, one mentioning that The Mother's flock had set down in an old quarry a few miles outside of Monroe County. Unfortunately, the fate of Rook is unknown and his current presence has as such been mitigated. There is also speak of his "uncharacteristic" care of Monroe -- a trait unusual for most crows, and how he has shed quite a substantial amount of blood to protect the town. Another mention was likely made within one of these nests, of another man -- a crow in the area who was recently cast out from Monroe, some have claimed to see sightings of him closer to Silverton and near the C-P-F outpost in the area. None of them are certain of what part he played in being cast out from the town.

Message me if you want a more detailed summary of most of The Men and Women with Wings, as well as their positions -- and general operating areas, or more information on anything mentioned here. I'll be moving over to your other ticket for the rest.

Excusez mon français here as I shibboleth Racter for Rachter: My R2-D2's 64kb RAM just became bacon smoke.

So I've been fleshing out the three Crows who overthrew Maude Ma--going with the names 'Spline,' 'Cospline,' and 'Tan.' (for request approval ofc) I figure they're more or less bastardization titles that diverge from pure Crow culture, as they're essentially twisted mathematical terms that can by wrapped up as: a triumvirate. Thinking they'd utilized some right fearsome Chess-esque strategem to assassinate her--buffering any fishiness by applying a slapdash false identity to her (i.e. 'she lie--and she was Rachter / a Rachter / of Rachter, etc.)

'Spline,' itself also being a mathematical term, although one of higher order. It's also a type of jagged 'key,' which I felt could be a fun metaphor--also referencing the lore event episode's name. 'Spline's' initial takeover is one of those Antichrist-rising inspired things:--more or less creating confusion whilst attempting to appear 'magically' bestowed upon . I really liked the word 'Rachter,' too--as it sounds like Jurassic Park, or something. Something sly, of binary thinking, but also something terrifying to encounter--allegedly capable of masquerading as someone like Maude Ma.

I wrote a little fiction on it, but totally left 'Rachter' in the obscure corner--not really making it a noun, or an adjective, or creature, or a title a 'la 'False Messiah,' or anything in particular. Just something open ended--as I figure this Crow area talks a little differently than most. But I can totes erase all of that, too, as I know that's also in the lore request submission area.

So here's where the whole 'my brain just got vaporized' part comes into play:

'Rachter?' Have honestly never heard the word used anywhere. Or maybe I have, and just don't realize it. But I was researching some of these terms, just to explore etymology a little.

'Rachter' is basically mumble-rap--but 'Racter' shows up as the primary result, instead:

Campfire story, right lol. Doubly so because I've been trying to create a Crow sub-colony psuedo-language, recently, out of alphabet soup. But this stuff seems like an ironic creepypasta, or something. Try to abbreviate 'Rochester' into a 'Rachter' monster--this is what we get: A Windows 95 prototype droid created by The Mindgate.

----------------------------------------

I'm still going through all of the details on the other sub reply--but I am almost done. Should be able to send over a couple of quick Qs soon--just want to have, like, a small note's sheet to keep on my toon.
