Mark has a very positive attitude, somewhat overbearingly so, in order to stay on track and keep motivated. A little unhinged due to lack of contact with other living human beings, the abnormal positivity and enthusiasm is a result of lack of social stigma.
Before the apocalypse, he was constantly stuffed into and kept inside a small closet within his home by his abusive uncle when he was young, this constant abuse had hindered Mark’s ability to remain indoors, and started his claustrophobic tendencies.
Due to his claustrophobia, he spends as much of his time outside as humanly possible, preferring to stay out there, than to remain indoors. Due to constant exposure, he loves the outdoors and works better there than he does inside.
As per turn to loving the outdoors, he learned extensively about the flora and fauna of the nature he loved so much, studying to great lengths about these subjects, and how to care for them and the environment.
Growing up from the get go as not a peoples person, on top of the constant abuse from his uncle, and the overbearing relatives that visited his home, Mark developed social anxiety and antisocial tendencies due to these reasons. He hates big groups and prefers to remain in solitude, but does not mind at all the company of his little sister, the one light in his life.
Character Motivations
His main goal is to locate and find his younger sister, and discover if she has survived the apocalypse thus far. He is willing to put aside anything, including his own life to complete this.
Physical Appearance
Mark stands at a solid 5’6” somewhat overweight build, due to stress eating and somewhat overabundance of available food, from his skills out in the wilds. He has slanted, tired blue eyes that shine within the light. A dirty complexion from lack of standard hygiene availability as well as a very light tan on his otherwise plain skin. He adorns short ginger colored hair that he does his best to trim with what he has, as well as rocking a solid goatee around his mouth and chin. He has a semi-faded scar along his right shoulder blade from one of his abusive uncles' more brutal strikes when he was younger.

Biography
A family of two parents, an eldest brother, Mark, and their youngest sister. Mark shared little care and love for his parents due to their constant alcoholism and oblivious nature to their children's abuse. Mark suffered constant abandonment issues growing up due to the lack of care his parents took into account regarding their three kids. He looked up to his older brother, but felt betrayed when his brother joined the army to escape his family life and his parents. Feeling abandoned further, he turned to caring for his own young sister and hoping to be a better example than their older brother.
During his school years, he focused primarily on taking care of his sister as well as studying sciences such as biology, environmental sciences, and study of populations and technology to further his pursuits as an environmentalist, and study of more greener technologies to protect nature. While he suffered generally from lack of study in other fields, his intense focus on the sciences carried him through his school years just enough with little trouble. Growing up, he had little friends, primarily sticking to himself, his studies, and his sister. Regarded primarily by his peers as a hippie loner, most just ignored him, and he ignored them.
Just before his graduation, the apocalypse had started, during his lunch hours at school, enjoying a small meal on the roof, when he noticed the explosions, smoke, and chaos suddenly erupted within the city he was in. He originally planned to get to his family, primarily his sister and parents, however when he managed to find his sister, he had discovered that his parents were already lost. Leaving himself and his sister as the world collapsed, they decided to turn to the military, both in hopes of safety, and the possibility of reuniting with their older brother. They stayed in relative safety within military clutches for the first year of the apocalypse, however, this was soon destroyed by the cowardice of a single infected soldier. He hid his infection, and it was too late for the turn of events that led thereafter.
A domino effect, the military shelter was overrun from the inside out, the two Smithers siblings managed to flee the compound in the ensuing chaos.
After no results in finding their brother, and the dangers of remaining with a large group, on top of Mark’s anxiety piling up with the duties of taking care of himself and his sister, he turned to what he knew best and lead his sister into the nearby forests to live a life off the land, and away from civilization to avoid the plague all together.
They spent about 4 years together within the forests around the state of Southern Kentucky. They travelled through the vast wilds as primarily hunter gatherers, living a primarily nomadic lifestyle to avoid confrontation from both the undead, and humanity itself. However, this soon came to an end. On one of their trips, they stumble upon a familiar face and gruesome sight. A fear lingering within Mark’s mind suddenly came to the forefront as a terrible reality. They stumble upon their older brother, tattered and torn, as one of the undead.
Up to this point, Mark has encountered the undead, but has never attempted to kill one, and has primarily evaded them or sneaked past. However, due to the state of his brother, The sheer shock of the revelation, they almost didn’t move when the undead brother attacked Mark's sister. To save his sister, he put his brother to rest by killing his corpse, claiming his first zombie kill. After burying the remains of their brother, they decide the harsh reminders of their past and their current situation was too much, and decided to leave their homeland and journey north, in hopes that the colder environment would stall or freeze the primarily undead corpses of the infected hordes.
During their travels northward, they encounter a group of survivors that catch the duo off guard. They are friendly, offering the young duo food and shelter. This group of five came from a nearby settlement and offered the two a place to settle down, with the mindset of a bigger group would increase their odds.
While Mark hated the idea, due to prior experience and his hatred of groups, he got into one of his first fights with his sister, who wanted to stay. After a brief exchange, the two agreed to settle with the group at behest of the sister, with Mark begrudgingly going along with it.
During their time in this community, Mark’s sister grew attached to a motherly figure within their community whose name was Sarah, that resembled their own mother. This caused a rift between the siblings, due to Mark’s lingering feelings towards their mother, and in turn, Sarah, and the sister who had essentially moved on from that previous trauma. This too, was short lived when the community was overrun by an aggressive group of hostile survivors.
During the attack, Mark was separated from Sarah and his sister in the ensuing chaos of the attack. Due to the fighting and the hostile group attacking and burning their community down, as well as the attracted infected joining the fray, Mark had little to no time to try and find the two he was looking for, and had to abandon the location and escape barely with his life intact.
Fleeing for his life, he assumes the worst, as he cannot go back to try to look for his sister, however a promise made by the two, he knew if she was still alive, she would continue north, and as such, he would keep that promise too and continue north himself. He now continued this journey alone as he tried to both escape the flames of his past, while also searching for his missing sister.
On one of his more fateful adventures, Mark stumbled upon an injured young man, who had suffered several gunshot wounds and had broken his leg falling down a hill. Mark would later get to know this man as Nye Warner, a young lad raised up in the apocalypse by somewhat famous doctor parents, who he would confirm for Nye that had lost their lives in a gunfight.
Mark treated the rest of the Nye’s injuries using alternative medicine from his teachings out in the wild, and helped nurse him back to health. Learning the loss of his family, Mark felt sympathy for the depressed young man and tried to keep him going. Mark told him about his own journey to find his sister, and in a feeling of debt, Nye told Mark he’d join him in finding his sister. While he kept Nye covered in a secluded old cabin, he continued his search in the area, even interrogating some of the gang that had wiped out Nye’s parents. He learned more of a potential lead to his sister in New York, Monroe County. With the new lead, and Nye now healed up, the duo set out for Monroe County to continue his search for his young sister.
Mark ends up in Monroe county, his age beginning to catch up with him. He feels he only has so much more he can do to find his sister to reunite with her, and continues his journey to find the source of his current lead, with the help and company of the young Nye Warner to keep him in check.
