≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Character Name
Claim to Cawwwww!

What sort of authorization do you want?
Faction Relationship

Which faction would you like to be authorized to have an established relationship with?
The Crows:

As John Smith returns to his path and affiliations with The Crows, so too does he dub his new troop:

The Monroe Crows

His Flock's tenants will mostly follow those established by Rook, and John will assume the role of 'Flock-Father' over new fledglings. He also intends to have it be known that 'The Monroe Crows' are a spiritual replacement of Rook's flock, so to speak, for any Lost Ones without home throughout The Barrens.

While John is creating this Flock for his own reasons (character progression / thawing from past failures), he's also doing so to garner the notice of The Mother--as well as Blackwell. For better or worse (hopefully the former), he hopes to make the new Flock's presence known via old Dead-drop caches, etc.

His Flock's current hub of residence is in the Cave of Secrets, up the flight of stairs from Jinichi's Refuge, forward--hanging a left--up the next flight of stairs, and beyond the creepy wooden sign. There's currently no claim on this area, and it's stated to be such a public area for free looting (so far, at least--need muh bunkroom claim at The Refuge.) Any wandering Crows are invited to join rank and hang out in the area, no prior clearance required.

Any-who, just let me know if this is all cool--or if there's anything in particular John should do to further bring this Flock to the forefront. The dead-drop caches would reference The Cave of Secrets Crow Sanctuary, and the Sanctuary, itself, references the Refuge below as a place to find affiliates/allies.

I can send along anything at all, via lore ticket, if need be--and thank ya ahead of time for reading through this!-

Hey, Devon!
First, I want to offer an apology for not answering your ticket sooner. I've been dealing with some medical problems IRL and I haven't had as much time as I would like to check the website.

Now, onto The Monroe Crows. I am absolutely fine with you assuming the position that Rook previously laid claim to. The claim should also be totally fine for the faction base. We aren't strictly enforcing it (and even less so for The Crows given their nomadic tendencies) but we do suggest setting up some general livable areas for your NPCs to live at. Tents, sleeping bags, forest beds, even some blankets will suffice.

Now, I see you mentioned wanting to get the sight of The Crow Mother. Before I respond any further, I want to ask some questions for more information. First of all, how long has it been now that John has been leaving these messages? For that matter, do you have any specific locations for the Crow Nests?

The last question is more of a preference for you, I know time-zones can be a bit of a pain to navigate around. Would you like any of my responses to be left at physical locations in-game, or would you rather roleplay scenes out in-game, or even on Discord? A few of us have started using the Discord to navigate around the problems with time-zones since the in-game is sparse with activity outside of event nights. Let me know! We can figure something out as soon as you get back to me on that.

Oiii,

All sounds great. I'll send along a quick outline with the basic tenants, Crow name, etc.

• For the livable areas: Coolio as well--while I have John living in Jinichi's cave, I'm most likely going to relocate him back up north.

Because he's taking up traditional Crow values now, he unfortunately won't reside in Monroe. Jinichi's cave now known as an economic partner hub, it's unlikely that John would want to take up roost there, either. Kind of a bummer, but the resulting remedy may actually be better: hopefully establishing a direct, formal alliance with the town of Monroe.

•As for the supply caches up until now, I've just had John's activity sort of exist beyond mechanics (hopefully this is alright--it's mostly on y'alls good graces.) He's presumably been leaving information for about a week now, his most recent update having been during Terry's speach. I can totally drop in physical notes, though. (I'll have that map sent over)

• Because the supply cache drops will hopefully be physical locations, I figure they'd be cool little 'mailboxes' for Terry, primarily, and other core Monroe leaders. Naturally, any major Crow information (including this) will be urged to be kept secret. Knowing these things exist, however, I feel would sort of allow for a wider spread, playerbase-wise, to expand upon the area. It's sort of meta, I know, but being that John's current Crow Flock will most likely consist of NPCs, one less PC in Monroe would probably be negligible when the alternative exists. Cool little fledgling trial to add some mystery, etc.: 'Go to the land beneath the dead--there you will find answers,' sort of thing.

• For the timezones, day-to-day, work, and general life bustle--playtime hours are all over the place, on my end. I normally play very late at night, but tend to have Discord up throughout the day--9am - 5pm, est. All in all, the supply cache messages sound awesome. Sounds like it'd give us a lot of flexibility with RP, and it sounds like some fun RP in its very nature.

• Discord RP also sounds rad in any form.

Any-who, I'll have this stuff sent over soon!

(Edit: I've...totally forgotten how to identify coordinates in-game. I've also forgotten how to input them into the online PZ map to hone in on locations. Would a quick rundown be alright? I might've just used Necro in the past, or something, because I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this ?. I'll drop in the supply cache coordinates in, just for quick teleport on y'alls end)

Alrighty, here we go:

On a presumed three-item list of things capably upsetting The Crow Mother...
This may very well be my second to scratch off.
(I don't want to die--I just want to flyyyy)

So! As per tradition:

Tenant One, in its Final Application Prior to Acquisition:
'A Crow must take a new name once initiated into the tribe.'

John Smith, yet-unnamed Lake Erie Crow Flock member; subsequent hawk, since reinstated via duty's proof of virtue; subsequent ex-Crow, therein of unafilliated Monstrophy title-claim; Barrens resident, and Banisher thus returns to The Crows upon his newly instated Flock, The Monroe Crows--herein to be known as Flock-Father by the name of:

Eototo.

'Eototo'
is namesake uptaken in honor, homage, and intended spiritual virtue to the Hopi kachina deiti, a Wuya, of the same name. In presumed myth, Eototo is said to personify nature. He is said to be chief, or "father" of all kachina deities--second only to Angwusnasomtaka.
(No, I'm not trying to bang. )
(Yes, I do understand the potential danger in claiming such lofty position. Yikes.)

Considered the prime deliverer of natural gifts, such as Level 10 Foraging bandages, Eototo is said to have come from The Red Land. Every dry season, when the Hopi pray for rain, Eototo travels north--subsequently returning with plenty of rain. To further summon it, as the legend goes, Eototo draws cloud symbols upon the ground in cornmeal.

Crow Supply Cache Locations:

This supply cache exists within a Crow Case--or large chest--hidden within the stocks of a cornfield. While Crows will likely know of its existence, as it's likely to have been utilized before as per symbolic locality, Lost Crows may not be so lucky.
This is Eototo's 'mailbox of private residence,' so to speak--yet it considered private in the way a house's address would be.

This Crow Cache is intended for Lost Crows, New Crows, and Crows which may not know how to proceed in finding their home. While it isn't necessarily public, it's easily relayed through other Crows in the area--as it is considered to be Eototo's 'public mailbox' for the Crows.
It is located within the circled cabin: Within a regular, identifiable, Crow Cache Chest. (Might be in the furnace, though. Need to hide it somehow.)

This Crow Cache's location will be given to the new Minister of Monroe, its serving Doctor, and its serving role of defense. This Crow Cache is unknown to other Crows--and Eototo's Monroe allies will not be informed of the Primary Crow Cache. They will be informed of the Lost Crow Cache--but will be instructed to not speak of it unless it is to Lost Crows.
This Crow Cache exists in the cornfield behind Duke's old house--at the highway bend.

Same rules as above--but this is simply a 'backup location' if Millers etc. were to raid, and/or if the primary cache were to be discovered by hostiles--or similarly rendered unusable.
The Crow Cache is in the cornfield next to the graveyard above the Cave of Secrets:

The Crows of Monroe: Tenants:
Below are Rook's Tenants, revised under Eototo's Wing

  1. A Crow must never raise arms against children, the innocent or the sickly.
  2. A Crow must never betray their flock--and should come to their aid when requested.
  3. (Revised) A Crow and its Flock must seek what knowledge the area provides--urged to then depart anew, and alone, to seek their True Name.
  4. A Crow must do everything in their power to protect the innocent in their vicinity, Crow and Non-Crow alike.
  5. (Revised) A Crow is to abide by their Flock-Father's instated 'laws of the local land,' - those which coincide with the land's governing forces. If such forces are deemed to be unfit by the Flock-Father, The Crows of Monroe will default to self-instated laws of self-governance.
  6. (New) A Crow must never exploit, manipulate, subvert, transform, or otherwise alter any living being's nature via scientific or mystical means.
  7. (New) A Crow must abandon the above Six Tenants in the event they are applied in self-discerned wicked ways.
  • A Crow must take a new name once initiated into the tribe.
  • A Crow and it’s flock must be in constant migration unless spiritually-bound or honour-bound to a location
  • If a Crow becomes a Hawk, they must be hunted and purged by all means necessary while upholding the Seven Rectrices

This is all fine! I'll see about roleplaying the things we talked about up above soon. Should be free at some point this week/weekend, possibly even later today if you're still around. We can do it fully over Discord, or on the server! So long as you free tonight, I'll ping you. I wouldn't mind figuring out how to get you/The Crows back into the fold full-fledged. I'll set up a few NPC "Mailboxes" on the map, too (to encourage some more exploration and discovery of some of the other Crow Covens that may have passed through)! I'll show you where they are (and also how to use the coordinate system). That way we can do some stuff on the server via notes and whatnot. I'd hoped some more players would set those up earlier in the lore, but none exist that I know of.

Ditto. I love all of this. It fits well with the Crow Faction. I'll see about dropping some stuff at those mailboxes soon.

Any-who, that sounds great about the faction/mailboxes stuff: I'm stoked to see how stuff evolves. I've been leaning towards this, like, hard-boiled paranormal detective stuff recently--and I admittedly do lowkey enjoy the, like. 'Dude who's in over his head' type of vibe, so to speak. Akin to Jim Hopper, from Stranger Things, sort of, in that he's just sort of running head-first into god-knows-what, taking up dangerous status-names to find answers. Starting up a Flock, from essentially nothing, I figure it'll be one of those 'Year One,' type of deals: He and Simone pulling for resources, sort of...BSing(?) their way along until they make footholds. But gambling at very high stakes, I figure.

So all that jazz aside:

I'll likely be making an Eototo bio, just to sort of add to this framework, if that's coolio. I've had some good fun tinkering on some ideas, potentially non-mechanical Discord side-adventures: Going undercover, potentially to Bartertown, to locate a rare gem collector, or something, to learn more about the Trullan Stone. Or perhaps Miller leads, stuff like that. Dangerous stuff, especially for the likes of he and Simone, essentially having to rely on street-smarts and social-weaving to find who they need to find.

I do like the idea of 'Eototo' being more of an invisible entity: Sort of like the whole Hightower thing, back in Ashwood Cove. While John is indeed dedicated to traditional (?) Crow values now, he's more or less relying on a bluff-start to cover the duo until they gain additional followers. So I totally vibe with any mailbox NPCs essentially being scattered / tough to meet, etc. I won't say John's Flock is a sham, necessarily, but: In the realm of political campaigns, theirs is, metaphorically, a sort of guerilla-warfare. This does balance out, though, as John's approach to Flock-related stuff, essentially, is contingent on the last Retrice:

The idea, for arriving Flock-members, is to eventually realize they needn't abide by Retrices to become a little more self-actualized. The whole 'True Name' thing--that's simply a right of passage via coming to terms with oneself, so to speak. Being that plenty of Crows will probably take up their new, Crow-like names upon joining, the intention is to have them depart (destination-unknown pilgrimage), and to return with their original, non-Crow name. 'John Smith,' just as dat example, having never taken a legitimate Crow name in Erie.

This isn't to say Eototo, or any Flock-members having truly realized themselves in new identity, are inherently wrong of course: The idea, mostly, is to help Fledglings become independent--whether they adopt a new identity, realize their old identity (Crow or prior) wasn't truly them, or whether they return to their original approach to life entirely. The entire thing is still pretty murky, while tinkering on it, to be honest. But It'll be fun to explore. (And probably break the whole damn engine, a few times, in the process lol)

I will say, though, that eventually John will probably settle in and go full-Caw at some point. He definitely does align with that stuff, it's just that he's sort of using less traditional resources to get started. Either way, I mayhaps a happenstance hypothetical happen-haps-have-a-request (I can't do what how do it is that, today)--
*Mayhaps I request, at some point, occasional server list name-swaps? (From John Smith to Eototo). It'd be pretty fun, in general, especially in rare cases where it might be particularly useful.

Thank ya for reading through this stuff, as always. I can just send along a message on Discord/Steam, if anything, for dice rolls relating to that stuff if that sounds good. I’m down for wherever though. With the wind I go!

Apologies for the wait!

I love the idea of Eototo operating similarly to Hightower. The amount of players you got invested in that back in Ashwood Cove was insane. I cannot support that idea enough. Feel free to go nuts with it; create a bio, do forum stories, ask for help. It doesn't matter, I'm all in for it. Just give me an idea of what you need from our end and I'll see to it in a timely fashion.

Going undercover in off-map locations? Very down for this. I've been setting up locations and world-building them on Discord since the beginning of the lore. There are a ton of different places you can go to, all you have to do is let me know when/where you wanna do it. Pittsford? Done. Fairpoint? Doner. Bartertown? Donerer. Meet with factions? You got it. World is your oyster on that, I can arrange anything and everything you want. I'll only tell you that everything has risk though! I don't let everything go "super smoothly". It's the nature of going to these places. Just let me know, and I'll set you up for a grand adventure.

Pilgrimages are solid. I like the idea behind the naming conventions - it lines up very much with the Crows, I feel. The whole faction sort of falls behind that pseudo-narrative "new you, better tomorrow" religious stuff to begin with to an extent with the commandments and loyalty aspects. So it works, and it works super well.

You can also have name swaps. Just let me (or another admin) know when you're on and want one.

Apologies on the wait, again, though. The whole leadership thing kind of got dropped on me and Pika out of nowhere. It's been difficult adjusting and getting everything set up on our end with the perms and whatnot.

Let me know if you need anything else!

This sounds like a lot of fun, thank ya kindly.

I saw the recent Monroe work postings, and it looks like it’d go really well with this stuff. I still need to figure out / explore that stuff IG, as I’m not entirely sure what it entails, but leaning towards the travel / tradesperson stuff seems like it’d go hand-in-hand, if the faction-faction politics and coordination seem favorable to everyone.

And also, thank you as well to the admin team in general for going through these lore requests and such. I know they’re probably kind of spammy at times, and I apologize for that lol. I honestly just submit request stuff before I accidentally forget to (incidentally forgetting, there, due to subsequent fun stuff in your lore that I want to make more requests for.)

So forreal, definitely a sincere thank you to each of the admins for all of this stuff. The lore, the events, the mods, the NPCs, the builds, ticket requests, items—all of it. I’ve already mentioned it over Discord to ya, but here as well, too: A congrats to yourself and Max as new owners. There are no two better pilots out there, as far as I’m concerned, and I’m really happy to see the community in such good hands.

I can only imagine everything has been pretty busy, and am very thankful for the time invested in all of this. <3
I’ll likely be jettisoning random lore requests in, here and there, but it’s no rush—again, mostly just for tossing in anything in the moment before the next pops up.

But if there’s anything super pressing (fort burned down, subsequent intra-faction death penalties, auto-cannibalism necessitated), I can mayhaps just bump the thread or Discord ping, if that’s okay? I’m unsure if it’ll ever be needed, but—hey, sometimes a jetpack is needed YaKnawI’mSayin’?

(Just stuff like lore clarifications / hypothesis attempts / item usage questions in dire situations, if such arise)

So with that, one last question here if it’s coolio (it’s not dire) —

How much does a horse cost?
