You'll be playing the role of a surviving Browncoat/Frontier Ranger of the Republic of Texas. You were stationed at an outpost on the RoT Railway System called Hardesty Ranch with several others. As your tenure at the outpost came to an end, you and your group swapped out with the next season's watch soldiers and began your journey back to the capital city with your commanding officer, Captain Braddock.
On the way, your caravan came upon a man in need of assistance, Griff Duffy. Ever dutiful and willing to help, you and Captain Braddock took Duffy under your care but stopping to help delayed your travel and forced you to make camp for the night. During your respite, a number of bandits descended upon your camp - you'd heard stories of them before: Rogue Crows. They were under the command of Cheyevo, a violent warlord and former lieutenant for The Crow Mother.
Your entire camp was attacked and razed while most slept, caught unaware. The few survivors who were captured, including yourself, endured unspeakable torture at the hands of the Rogue Crows. Some were even eaten by the bandits or their Skin Hound beasts. As the last of your group was whittled down, only you and Braddock remained. In a desperate bid for freedom under cover of a dust storm, the two of you escaped with intent to return to Hardesty Ranch.
You come in during this segment and are the character referred to as the Sole Survivor -- Braddock may or may not make it with you. It'll depend on how many people show up and whether or not I think we need an extra gun.
Act 2 - The Head:
As the night unfolds, the ranch remains deceptively quiet. We have the freedom to explore the property's interior during the dust storm. Inside, we uncover a makeshift workshop within an old root cellar, and upstairs, we stumble upon a radio room. These discoveries leave us with lingering questions surrounding what became of the inhabitants. If Griff survives, he steps forward, offering to mess with the radio in an attempt to establish contact with the Republic of Texas. He mentions his prior role as a radio operator for the group, showcasing a basic but functional understanding of its operation. After a meal, our characters have the opportunity to get some much-needed rest. Whether a nightwatch is established or not is a decision left in the hands of the players.
In the middle of the night, after the dust storm clears up, we hear commotion from outside. A person screaming for help. When we arise, we can see them through the windows; bloodied, wounded, beaten and battered, not too dissimilarly from those people we saw back at the caravan.
The group has the option to go outside to investigate - Griff will object and say whoever it is has to be a goner, where they will find the Sole Survivor collapsed at the front of the house. They’re badly wounded but still clinging to life. If brought inside, the survivor can be treated by someone with the appropriate skills, where we will also discover the grisly extent of the injuries - deep lacerations, claws, and chunks of flesh torn away by something animalistic.
As your group attends hastily to the survivor's wounds, their anguished cries are accompanied by terrified murmurings. Bending close, you strain to make out words between agonized gasps: "Came from nowhere... tore through us... not human, his beasts." The name "Cheveyo" escapes the survivor's lips in a whisper.
From this point on, you can do whatever you want -- play it by ear, do what you think would be more interesting. You can stay semi-catatonic, you can gradually recover, you can join in on the fighting, you can do whatever you want and you can even potentially suggest using the Hardesty Ranch's radio to try and raise reinforcements from the RoT. I trust you.
Some other information about the Republic of Texas to give you more of an idea about what it is:
Brown-Coats (Frontier Rangers)
The Texas Brown-Coats, Frontiersman, or Rangers are an expeditionary force employed for us by the New Texas Republic. The duties of the force operated under ‘combined arms’, carrying out climatized, border, expeditionary and policing in Republic territories.
Republic Army
The Republic Army serves as the second-biggest land-force and is responsible for the upholding of peace in Republic territories, as well as the defense of Republic ideals in wartime.
The Capital
The capital city of Austin was the thriving heart of the Republic of Texas. Situated along the banks of the Colorado River, it had rebounded strongly after the outbreak to become a veritable metropolis.
As the central hub connected to all routes of the RoT Railway, Austin served as the economic and political center of the republic. Farmland in the surrounding Blackland Prairies supported the city, while the Colorado provided hydropower and access to trade routes. Skilled engineers and artisans practiced diverse trades, fueled by resources transported on the rail lines.
The seat of Texas government was based in Austin, with elected officials directing citizen militias, setting laws, and making contact with other settlement leaders. Envoys often traveled along the railway to negotiate trade deals or forge new alliances to expand Texas' reach. Maintaining security of the railway was crucial for Austin to flourish as a beacon of renewal.
Citizens took pride in Austin's revived culture, with community theaters, scholars, and even refined restaurants - unheard of in most post-war regions. Behind thick walls, the people had reclaimed a semblance of how life had been before the bombs. Protecting this symbol of endurance no doubt motivated many. As one charged with safeguarding the lifeline to Austin, the capital city would have represented hope, industry, governance - a bright promise that civilization could be rebuilt, given guardians like the Texas Browncoats watching over the rail lines.
Life on the Railways & The Railway System
The railway was a marvel of post-fall engineering, built to connect the far-flung communities across the rugged southwestern deserts and mountains. Stationed at regular intervals were military outposts like Hardesty Ranch, manned by Texas Browncoats who maintained the tracks and protected travelers on the line. The railway was a vital resource, transporting goods and people while also spreading Texas' sphere of influence. It linked the republic's farmlands and mining colonies to the capital city of Austin at the hub.
Raider gangs posed a recurring threat, with their hit-and-run tactics aimed at derailing trains and ambushing travelers. Some groups like the Crows had grown remarkably large and well-organized in the lawless border regions. Merely finding where the raiders launched attacks from could be an ordeal across the untamed wilderness.
The rugged terrain presented natural hazards too. Flash flooding or rockslides might damage the tracks, sometimes cutting off sections of the rail line for weeks until repaired. Harsh weather like dust storms also provided cover for attacks, as did the long stretches between outposts like Hardesty Ranch.
Supply routes to keep the outposts stocked were another challenge, requiring military caravans that themselves needed guarding from threats. Maintaining morale was an uphill battle too, as Browncoats faced constant threats with little rest between deployments protecting the rail network. It took brave souls indeed to serve in such a dangerous role safeguarding the lifeline of the RoT.
Your Fellow Browncoats & Caravanmates
- Cpt. Braddock | Commanding officer of the Hardesty Ranch militia outpost. Tough but fair man.
- Pvt. Fox | Young recruit, first tour on the frontier. Eager to prove herself. Held out fairly long before her head found itself separated from the body.
- Pvt. Lane | Grizled veteran of multiple campaigns. Seen it all on the frontier and still kicking, or ... was until a few days ago.
- Pvt. Ramsey | Big bull of a man, best shot on the ranch. Likes his whiskey a bit too much. Never got a final drink
- Pvt. Krawic | Quiet engineer, keeps the outpost equipment running. Handy in a fight until he lost his hands.
- Sgt. Imada | Hard-nosed NCO who keeps the privates in line, served under Braddock for years on the frontier circuit. Worm food now.
- Cowan | A scruffy frontier trader who knows the land like the back of his hand. Until he lost it, and then some.
- Danziger | Cowan's tradepartner. Will do what it takes to defend his home and livelihood ... Didn't work out so well for him.
- McMinn | A land surveyor traveling home from mapping newly acquired territories. Never made it back.
- Siedow | The season's doctor, keeps the others healthy and breathing. Lackluster on that front as of a few nights ago.
- Griff Duffy | Picked him up on the side of the road, injured. You never saw his body and you sure never saw him in a cage. Wonder what happened?
