≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Desmond is a remorseful, miserable, and overall morose person. His issues are hidden behind a particularly headstrong persona, which works to create an extreme masculine Irish-American archetypal character. He takes pride in his self-dependence and has a reluctance to accept charity, and in most cases will purposefully avoid asking for any type of help. Desmond, while being a hard-worker toward his job, his work (and for that matter the entirety of his social and personal life) are effected heavily by his alcoholism. Desmond is always seeking another drink, and excusing his drinking by both his past and his work. This is a recurring issue with Desmond, where he frequently pushes blame off himself and onto someone or something else. While drunk, his inner anguish is directed out in the form of anger toward others and in large, the world. It is unsurprising then to know that Desmond is a strong believer in pub culture.

Character Motivations
Desmond lacks over arching motivation, and as such acts more as a lost person wandering through life. His goals are unimpressive, and relate more to his day to day life. His recurring goal is his fixation on going to a pub, getting alcohol from the packie, and surviving his physically strenuous work while soothing his hangover. Now, thrust into a confusing world, Desmond fears for the safety of his child and seeks to find any information whatsoever he can on the East Coast.

Physical Appearance
Desmond's appearance is a reflection of his life, a complete mess. His hair is actively thinning out, and is kept constantly unkempt. Desmond does not even bother to run a comb through the remainder of it. His hair, once brown, is now mottled with streaks of grey throughout. Desmond can be judged as looking older than he is, appearing more as if he was in his mid to late forties than late thirties. His facial hair is nothing more than unshaven stubble built up over the course of a week. Desmond's once striking feature was his deep blue eyes, now his red, bulbous nose is more likely to attract attention. The nose is a result of his alcoholism, another by product of it being the blotchy skin covering his face. When looking at Desmond as a whole, he does appear to be well built. Standing at 5'10'', Desmond clocks in at 182 pounds. Most of which being muscle, the rest, being booze.

Biography
In the Spring of 1975 Desmond Connall was born to an Irish-American family in Louisville, Kentucky. Desmond came from his Mother fighting, and throughout his life has been fighting ever since. From early on, Desmond's life has been fraught with issues. The youngest of five boys in an impoverished household in the suburbs of Jeffersontown, Desmond was often the runt of his family. His Father was a raging alcoholic who was prone to fits of anger, frequently beating on his Mother.

Desmond found himself closest to his Mother. She was the one to protect him against the dangers of his world. Be it the torment of his brothers or his Father's fits, his Mother was there to soothe him from all that troubled young Desmond. She was the only thing he could find comfort in, in the unstable life he lived. However, his Mother could only protect him for so long, and far sooner than she hoped Desmond would have to live free from her protection.

A marriage with frequent domestic abuse is hardly a solid foundation to raise 5 children on, when adding the financial issues atop it? It was enough to topple their marriage, and when Desmond was 13 years old his mother decided enough was enough. She left, for good. His Mother, unwilling to fight out the legal process to escape her situation, decided to save herself while she still could. Leaving behind all of her children with her abuser, she left them and went to reconvene with family.

Understandably, the family did not take this well. His Father least of all, and the beatings shifted from his Mother, to them. All while this happened Desmond was lectured on what it meant to be a real man, what it meant to provide, and the importance of family. This lecturing was intermittent between the beatings, and this kind of indoctrination took root. His Father's outbursts became less spread out as more and more of his brother's left the house, leaving just Desmond to endure the pain.

Desmond graduated high school, and once he found himself a part-time job he began renting an apartment with his brother Patrick. Their apartment, a stone's throw away from their childhood home in Jeffersontown, was now located in downtown Louisville. Desmond immersed himself in the pub culture of the area, and as such, he found Laura Cain. The woman he would later go on to marry. Desmond was introduced to his future wife through Patrick, the two were strong-spirited people that took a certain liking to one another. Their relationship began when Desmond was 19, and things went well for a time.

Desmond had gone into construction when the opportunity presented itself, giving him a decent pay upgrade and a stable full-time job. He’d moved from sharing an apartment with his brother, to now sharing an apartment with his girlfriend a year after they started dating. Desmond for the most part remained stable and had yet to fall into his alcoholism. The two frequented bars and drinking however, though not to unhealthy extent.

Desmond continued to work at his job steadily, relishing in the industrious nature of the work. The years began to slip away from him, and during this period of his life Desmond was truly happy. On February 23rd, 2001, Laura took a pregnancy test that came back positive. The two, unwilling to birth out of wedlock, Desmond proposed that day and the two were joined in marriage 7 months later. 2 months after that on November 18th, 2001, Declan Connall was born.

Laura Connall and Desmond Connall both sought a house to move into. The pair had decided to put a down payment on a house in Fairdale. Things remained peaceful, and rather uneventful, for a while. Desmond watched his son grow, imitating himself when he was young. For a time, Declan had the freedom to blossom where Desmond couldn’t. Situations change, and as the recession of 2008 drew near, other issues reared their head. Desmond’s Father, now in his early to mid seventies, had grown deathly ill. Developing liver cirrhosis, Desmond’s father wasn’t long to life if he wasn’t given medical attention.

The only two left in the area to take care of him were Patrick and Desmond. Patrick, still living in his dingy apartment, left this burden up to Desmond. Despite all the wrongs committed against him, Desmond recalled the words his Father spoke of family and housed the man in his own house. His wife, un-supportive of this, disagreed with Desmond at every junction he arrived at. The recession hit them hard as they were recent homeowners, and their loan payments were soon higher than the market value of their home.

Up to their ears in financial troubles and worries, his wife losing her job, and his Father’s medical bills piling up, Desmond began dealing with his troubles in the bar. Desmond started stage one of his alcoholism, much to the dismay of his wife. She was vocal about her disapproval of this. This sparked all types of arguments and fights between the couple. Desmond’s drinking only spiraled further out of control when his Father passed, a year after they took him into their home. Desmond finally fell into his family history.

His excessive drinking coupled with his now explosive attitude, his alcoholism began taking a toll on his home life. His drinking began affecting his job, and when he’d turn up hung over it didn’t make the greatest impression. This irritation, stretched over the course of months, was enough to have Desmond let go of his job. Desmond’s response, was the response he’s had to his past tragedies, to immerse himself further in his addiction.

Burning through money saved for a rainy day on booze, the escalating arguments between the couple, and the frantic feeling of a recession slowly drowning them in murky water is what prompted Laura to start searching for a divorce lawyer in the summer of 2010. Unlike his Mother, Laura was willing to duke out the court battles, and even willing to have their son testify falsified abuse charges. Accusing Desmond to, on multiple occasions, have hit Laura during their frequent disputes. Coupled with his alcoholism, their court proceedings were over within 10 months.

Laura had gotten full custody of Declan, and Desmond had strict visitation rights to his son. The two sold their house, and Laura took a majority in the divorce. Returning to live with brother Patrick, who now lived with his girlfriend in a two bedroom house in the ghetto of Park Drive, Louisville. Desmond, ruling himself by his pride, was unwilling to let the courts dictate when he could see his son, especially on faulty evidence. As such, once Desmond had gotten himself another construction job, he began to visit his son fairly frequently from under the nose of Laura. This continued for only the span of a month before she had caught wind of it, and it resulted in another legal battle. This time, Desmond lost all visitation rights toward his son until his son was a legal adult. After the court cases, Laura had decided to take Declan out of Kentucky, moving toward the East Coast to live with family in Massachusetts.

Desmond was crushed, feeling as though he had failed to be a proper man by not even having the right to visit his son. His habits increased, and his brother took no strides to stop him, even drinking with him on occurrence. Desmond continued to drift through life, wallowing in self-pity and refusing to clean up his act. His work suffered from it, Patrick’s relationship suffered from it as he was unwilling to allow Desmond to become homeless, any friends Desmond once had slowly began drifting away from him as he grew further from the person he once was.

Too absorbed in the bottle to realize the world events happening around him, Desmond was largely oblivious to the Corto Virus until it was at his front door. As protesters began parading through the city, setting fire to the streets, looting stores, and clashing against officers, Desmond and Patrick stayed in their dingy apartment. Patrick’s girlfriend left the two to be with her family out of the city. The two had nothing else to do other than peer outside their own blinds to see the state of the world. Louisville was crumbling, and the National Guard realized this.

Patrick and Desmond were pulled from Louisville and placed inside a National Guard controlled neighborhood just a town down in West Point. Within 2 days of arriving at the National Guard controlled neighborhood there’s an order to evacuate all civilians, the pick-up zone from the military being in Muldraugh. Desmond, packing up the rest of his booze and personal items, makes the trek with his brother to the military pick-up zone in Muldraugh.

It's come to our attention that some people have misread the group randomizer question, I'm here to double-check and make sure you're in the correct pool.

Right now Demond Connall is IN the group randomizer pool. Do you want to be in one of the randomized groups or start on your own?
