≫ WHAT'S UP WITH GATEWAY ROLEPLAY? ≪

  • We've been radio silent for a long time now. We posted an announcement in our Discord server back in April of 2025, but never updated the forums. So what's up with Gateway Roleplay?

After 5 long years, we've decided to place the development of Ties That Bind on an indefinite hold.

This doesn't mean it's cancelled. We fully intend to run Ties That Bind: What Lies Beneath and Ties That Bind: City of Angels eventually. But to do so, we need to take a step back. In the meantime, we'll be working on smaller, invite-only projects.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us this long! MindGate and I (Pika) have been working on this server for over a decade now. It truly is a passion project for us.

Personality
Anything is possible until your heart stops beating. This is what Father Gabriel Barton has survived on for the past twelve-or-so years while battling his own moral convictions with what society as a whole has become. He has adapted himself to the climate of the new world by steeling his nerves and accepting the reality of the situation while refusing to sacrifice his moral conventions of staying kind and open to the people he cares most about. Gabriel himself is a calculating, intelligent, and reserved man who rarely lets on what he actually feels for the sake of his companions. While he will offer help to anyone, and believes in second chances, he will not hesitate to act as the judging arm and eliminate potential threats to protect his people.

For the past few years, Father Barton has lived his life in perpetual isolation among a very large group of nomadic religious men in the Adirondack Mountains. This group worked with a very strict set of morals and code - you learned to fight, and you only defended yourself instead of attacking prematurely. They, however, were unforgiving in most of their trials against raiders who would not accept a second chance among the group. These men and women survived for numerous years and grew to live on the land, and left Father Barton with a deep appreciation of nature, life, and the commonalities between mankind as a whole. He is a proponent of not wasting and an even larger believer in that the Earth will supply those who look for it with whatever they need.

While he will often speak of believing in something, Father Barton rarely - if ever - means God. He has come to believe that society as a whole is driven on some form of belief, whether it be right, wrong, in someone, or in something. He recognizes that someone cannot truly commit to something unless they believe. He is not the type of man to force his religion onto someone else, but will often try and pick someone up and elevate them from what they might have originally been through his sage advice picked up from years in the Adirondack Mountains.

He is secretive about his past and rarely talks about it.

He has grown past the desire for fame and fortune but does still suffer from some vices. Father Barton suffered from alcoholism and chain-smoking early-on in his life and during the initial outbreak. While he will tend to avoid said objects, he still partakes on occasion to the detriment of his own health.

Character Motivations
In his own words, Gabriel has been out of the world for a spell and plans to walk it for a while. He has no real destination in mind and is more interested in what he believes to be the worthier part - how he gets there.

Physical Appearance
He is a reserved man who shows his age that stands in at five-foot-eleven inches and weighs in at one-hundred and fifty-one pounds. Father Barton is built averagely but tows on being lean from years of work and travel through the mountainous regions of New York state. His appearance often betrays his origins, being clean and approachable comparatively to most wanderers. He has long graying black hair which is usually done up in a tightly packed bun or braided and groomed beard. While his face is kindly, it shows tell-tale signs of both aging and weathering from the conditions.

Father Gabriel Barton can often be seen dressing smartly depending on his conditions, ranging from practical to clerical apparel for his services. He appreciates dressing in an inviting manner, and will do so as much as possible but is not above utilizing furs and handmade clothing to fight off the rigorous elements. He possesses a golden bracelet that he is never seen without.

Biography
Gabriel Del Barton was born on December 1st of 1975 in Houston, Texas. He grew up in an upper-class neighborhood with no siblings. He had an average upbringing, experienced what you would expect, and received high grades from his focus on education. After heading off to college, he married his childhood sweetheart who would later succumb to an inoperable brain tumor and lead him down a path of self-destruction with alcoholism and other acts. He ended up dropping out of college and fell in with some very bad groups of people who led him down a path of crime. Most of these acts blend together for him, but he still dwells on them. After a few years of this Gabriel sought help in the form of God and ended up attending several seminaries that led to him becoming an ordained priest later in life. While he never married again or really found himself growing close to anyone personally, he found some solace (and disgust) with his new occupation and faithfully served the town of Keene, New York. Listening to the confessionals of cheating husbands and wives, thievery, murder, and recovering child predators looking for another chance in life wore thin on him.

He was caught wholly off-guard by the waves of chaos from the initial outbreak. While Keene was a relatively isolated town, the numerous and ever-growing amount of refugees sent the town ablaze quickly. For the first few weeks, he kept his church open to the public as a refugee center but was eventually forced to abandon it after being held up by rogue members of the United States National Guard. Father Barton and members of his flock moved from place-to-place avoiding any signs of military and local law-enforcement who by this stage offered no help to the fearful locals. Over the course of the next few months, most of his flock dropped person by person until only he remained. He ended up isolated for a time, and even eventually found himself resorting to banditry to survive. It wasn't long before he fell in with a sizeable group of robbers, hucksters, and murderers who preyed on well-off groups, Barton played his role as an expert manipulator, luring men and women outside of the walls or gathering information through the use of his cloth. It kept him fed, clothed, and alive but offered no kind of fulfilling life. At about two years in, he abandoned the gang in the dead-of-night and staked out on his own again.

He spent a few weeks in isolation, moving back to his hometown of Keene where he would encounter a nomadic group of loosely religious men and women living in the closeby the Adirondack Mountains. Father Barton accompanied them back home and dedicated the next nine-to-ten years of his life with them. The Adirondack Clans, as they called themselves, were comprised of locals, old doomsday preppers, and descendants of the Iroquis. His time with them was rigorous for anyone. Everyone worked and everyone learned to fight defensively but skillfully. He adapted to the group and soon found himself working as one of their medicine-men and priests. Barton opened himself up to the spirituality of the group and left behind most of his Epicoastal beliefs, and instead came to accept the ways of the clans - belief in anything to keep the spirit going. After numerous years with the group, Father Gabriel Barton at the age of fifty-three chose to leave the clans to "walk for a while" - an effort that was in actuality a pursuit to atone for his past sins.
